Little Barry liked to explore. The three month old pup had wandered away from the meeting site and the other cubs and pup sitter.
It was a nice warm spring day. It was actually the first day of spring. The snow had melted and Berry felt it was a good omen. He saw birds flying overhead. He thought about how happy they must be to be able to fly. Not only that, he always heard them singing. The thought of this put a song in his heart.
Barry heard the wolf pack howl. That meant it was time for them to meet. Barry looked around, but realized he was lost.
He tried to howl, but only yelps came out. He sat down and cried he was so miserable.
Soon a rabbit went hopping by and started to run when he spotted Barry.
"Come back! Please come back," Barry cried plaintively.
The rabbit stopped, as if frozen in fear. But he turned and answered, "Tell me what you want before I take a step closer or run away. You look like an enemy."
Barry asked, "What's an enemy? Why do you hop?"
The rabbit was puzzled. To himself he thought, "Should I tell this wolf? Is he being clever so he can catch me?" Out loud he asked, "Why aren't you with your pack?"
Barry answered him, "Oh, that's my problem. I should be, but I got lost."
The rabbit pondered this and then replied, "So that is why you stopped me?"
Barry nodded his head to say yes.
Just then the pack's howling was heard again.
"Well, I guess your pack is over that way." And with that the rabbit pointed an ear in the direction of the sound.
"Follow the sound. Follow your nose," the rabbit said.
Barry looked at his nose, and he was momentarily cross-eyed.
The rabbit rolled his eyes. Then Barry turned his ears one way and then the other. He smiled a big smile and exclaimed, "I think it's that way, right?"
The rabbit smiled and nodded.
Barry turned to run, with a quick look back at the rabbit, he said, "Thank you! Thank you. And oh, what's your name?"
"Robin," the rabbit replied.
"Robin, what a strange name for a rabbit!"
"My parents had a strange sense of humor," the rabbit replied as he hopped off.
Barry started to run, but not until he had asked himself, "What's a sense of humor?"
