Skoon Cat Litter Review 2024: Recalls, Pros & Cons

Review Summary

Our Final Verdict

We give Skoon Cat Litter a rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Skoon Cat Litter is a unique type that uses diatoms instead of the more traditional method of using clay. It’s lightweight, and you will only need to replace it about once a month. You only remove the solid waste materials, and the diatoms absorb the urine, eliminating odor. It produces much less dust and is more environmentally friendly than standard litter. It takes a little getting used to, but it’s a fantastic alternative that we recommend trying.

Keep reading while we go over all of the pros and cons to help you learn a little more about this new type of litter.

Who Makes Skoon Cat Litter, and Where Is It Produced?

A company called Inova makes Skoon Cat Litter, and the main ingredients come from South America, but the location of the main headquarters is not clear. We could find very little information about Inova or any other products that they create.

Which Types of Pets is Skoon Cat Litter Best Suited For?

Luckily for us, all of our cats enjoyed using Skoon Cat Litter, and we think there is a good chance your cat will too. Its low dust content makes it better for cats that experience frequent urinary tract infections and for cats who were recently spayed or neutered.

Which Types of Pets Might Do Better with a Different Brand?

Some cats may be finicky and refuse to use this type of litter. It may be that they prefer their usual litter and dislike change. In that case, you could try a litter box attractant, which is a powder that tells cats where to relieve themselves.

If your cat doesn’t like Skoon, but you feel the current litter is too dusty or tracks too far into your home, it could be that your cat prefers the feel of the clay. In that case, we recommend trying out a brand like Dr. Elsy’s Ultra or Purina Tidy Cats.

You can also try wood litter like Okocat, or a silica litter like PetSafe to try to steer your cat away from clay-based kitty litters.

Discussion of the Primary Ingredients (Good and Bad)

There is only a single ingredient in Skoon cat litter, which is diatomaceous earth, a type of fossilized algae and aquatic organisms. It has many uses in health and can help reduce cholesterol, relieve constipation, and improve bones and nail health. It is a natural pesticide and can get rid of fleas and bed bugs, and you can use it as a filter for swimming pools and spas. These are only a few of the uses for diatomaceous earth.

It’s so useful because it has extremely porous that can absorb water almost as well as silica. When submerged in water, the microscopic pored can trap contaminants better than sand and other filter media. The diatomaceous earth pellets in Skoon Kitty Litter are large, so they won’t make much dust even if they get crushed, and they won’t track far from the litter box.

    Super Absorbant

One of the best things about Skoon Kitty Litter is that it absorbs cat urine very well. It will absorb an amazing amount of urine and will also dry out solid waste as well.

    Eliminates Odors

Because the diatoms absorb moisture so well, odors are trapped inside, and you will instantly notice relief from that litter box small. In most cases, you won’t smell urine at all, and the smell of solid waste diminishes as it’s dried out.

    Lightweight

Skoon Cat Litter is 75% lighter than clay-based litter, so it’s much easier to carry and pour. If you are used to buying clay-based litter by the pound. It can take some time to get used to the conversion, but it’s much easier to manage.

    Less Waste

Skoon is non-clumping and absorbs fluids, so you only need to remove solid waste from the litter box. No scooping out clumps of clay means there is much less refilling of the box and less going out to the trash.

    Still Requires Some Maintenance

Though Skoon Cat Litter has many benefits, your cat’s litter box will still require regular maintenance, and most of the problems people have with this type of litter have to do with skipping this important step.  When your cat urinates in the box, the urine concentrates in one area where it will create a puddle. The Skoon litter may absorb the first puddle, but the litter will quickly develop an odor if left unattended. You will need to stir the litter frequently to allow more pellets to contact the urine to absorb it quicker and trap the odors. It sounds strange and takes some getting used to, but it’s not hard, and we use the scooper to stir the litter.

    1. Skoon All-Natural Cat Litter, 8 lbs

Skoon All-Natural Cat Litter, 8 lbs

Skoon All-Natural Cat Litter, 8 lbs. is the bagged version of the Skoon cat litter meant for use in litter boxes. It comes in an 8-pound bag that usually lasts about a month, depending on how many cats you have and how often they use the box. The single ingredient is non-toxic and highly absorbent.  The large pellets won’t track far outside the box, and there is very little dust. It degrades in sunlight, so it’s environmentally friendly and it requires very little maintenance.

Skoon cat litter’s biggest downside is that it will require a special scooper to remove the solids. The pellets are too large to pass through most ordinary scoopers. You also need to sign up for a subscription plan to purchase the food from the company. It’s easy enough to cancel, and they alert you before sending out your next batch, but we would like it better if you could order it one batch at a time. Luckily, you can order it from Amazon, but it’s several dollars more expensive.

    Pros
    • High absorption
    • Non-tracking
    • Low dust
    • Low maintenance
    • Eco-friendly
    • Non-toxic
    • Single-ingredient
    Cons
    • Special scooper
    • Hard to purchase

    2. Skoon All-Natural Cat Litter, BOX

    Skoon All-Natural Cat Litter, BOX

The Skoon Cat Litter Box contains the same high absorption, non-tracking, low-dust, eco-friendly cat litter we saw in the last post but in a convenient throw-away box. The box converts into a temporary litter box that your cat can use until the litter requires changing. When the pellets change color, you dispose of the entire box and open a new one.

The downside to the box version of Skoon is that it’s only available from the company website, which means you have to sign up for recurring shipments. The boxes are also slightly smaller than the bag, so you will need to change them more often, increasing the cost significantly, especially if you have more than one cat.

    Pros
    • High absorption
    • Non-tracking
    • Low dust
    • Eco-friendly
    • Disposable
    Cons
    • Expensive
    • Shorter lifespan

    What Other Users Are Saying

We took a look around to see what other people are saying, and aside from complaints about urine sinking to the bottom of the litter box and not being absorbed, most users are happy with Skoon.

    Conclusion

Skoon Cat Litter is a great substitute for clay-based cat litter. It absorbs fluids very quickly and dries out solids to dramatically reduce odors. It’s non-clumping and extremely easy to maintain by scooping out the solids daily and replacing the litter every month. It’s a little more expensive than clay, but your home will be less dusty, and there will be less odor and less dust on the floor.

We hope you have enjoyed our in-depth look at this unique cat litter, and we have convinced you to give it a try. If you have found it informative and think it could help others, please share this guide to Skoon cat litter on Facebook and Twitter.
