I work at PAWS in Chicago (Pets Are Worth Saving), which is a low cost spay and neuter clinic that also has a small adoption program attached to it. Basically, we have a clinic in a very low income area in Chicago, where people can bring their pets to have them spayed or neutered for a nominal fee ($40) or for completely free if they are on public aid (food stamps, etc.). Every weekend we have events in different parts of Chicago to let people know we exist and to showcase some of our animals for adoptions. Normally we do not take in surrendered animal (that's what Animal Control is suppposed to be for), but our adoption manager, Paula, happeed to be at this event. A Hispanic family quietly drew her aside and presented a small grey kitten they had found a few days earlier in a garbage dumpster on the South side. Paula decided to break her own rule this once because she knew full well that animal control and all of the shelters are bursting at the seams with kittens and this little guy, though cute, wasn't especially flashy. So she agrees to take him into the PAWS program.
Fast forward a week later. I work in the clinic itself as the recovery tech (meaning I make sure all of the animals come out of anesthesia all right among other duties). I'm sitting in our lunch room on my break and my boss comes down from the adoption rooms and plops this little grey kitten on my chest, says "Here, get to know Danny for a sec while I make a quick phone call." So there I sit with a penaut butter sandwich in one hand and a trembling kitten on my chest. I have four cats of my own, so I go into mommy mode and start cuddling and calming him. He relaxes and starts purring and I go back to the exam room with him in tow. We had a fairly easy day so I wasn't needed in recovery. So I helped in the prelim room, helping with shots and blood drawing and anesthetizing. Danny had been diagnosed with worms and had to have a FIV test, so I held him while he had blood drawn and gave him his deworming pills. Never stopped purring. I was officially in love.
Got home and gushed to my girlfriend about this kitty. At first she was admantly against having yet another cat. (As I said, we already have four gorgeous kitties.) So, next time I went to PAWS, I dragged her with me and had her go up to meet him. Less than ten minutes, she was in love too. So we filled out the adoption application and got approved to adopt him. We couldn't take him home yet because they won't adopt out animals that aren't spayed or neutered yet. So, this past weekend, he finally got neutered and now he's home with me! We have renamed him Legolas since all of our kitties have Lord of the Rings name. We chose Legolas because of how long his legs are and beause he looks like a Russian Blue. (Legolas' home is Mirkwood which, if you hold a Middle Earth map up to a map of modern Europe, looks to be in the same general area as Russia/Siberia.)
Out of all of my cats, he is the cuddliest. Loves to chase and play, but his favourite thing seems to be curling up on my chest while I type on the comp or watch tv. He sleeps with me, which none of the others do since I'm a restless sleeper. He also has this strange habit of licking like a puppy. He'll come right up to me and touch noses (typical kitty greeting) and then start licking my nose or just above my mouth. (Is this begging behaviour like it is with puppies?)
