"I miss the years that were erased
I miss the way the sunshine would light up your face
I miss all the little things
I never thought that they'd mean everything to me"
"Hey!!"
"My buddy"
"The last picture of Malaika, taken one week before she crossed the bridge (here, she's with Emma)"
"Everything she does is beautiful, everything she does is right..."
"Tom in Cyprus (!) sent me a beautiful rose -- I feel so special!!!"
"Catster loves Malaika, and she LOVED to sit in front of the monitor when Mommy checked out Catster!"
Nicknames: Mara: Marty, Pirate Cat (Arg!), Hyperkitty, Fluffybutt Malaika: Chubby Little Baby Arms (Chubs), Speedy, Shnuffleuffagus (because she snores), Honeybears (they both go by this, because of their beautiful golden colors)
Kitty Complexion:
Coloration: Cinnamon-Tortie
Likes: They both LOVE to stare out of the windows at the birds and squirrels. They are also little water fiends, going from faucet to faucet, asking for them to be turned on. Mara loves to pounce on a shopping bag that now stays at the top of the stairs.
Pet-Peeves: They're pretty laid back -- not a whole lot annoys them, except maybe having strange people in the house. They also HATE the doorbell -- we disconnect it on Halloween.
Favorite Toy: String. They will eat it if allowed, so all string toys must be put up when playtime is over. They also love catnip -- it doesn't even have to be fresh or homegrown (hey, they ARE junkies, afterall!).
Favorite Nap Spot: Malaika can always be found at the top of HER cat tree (sawing major logs), and Mara prefers the loveseat.
Favorite Food: Science Diet (dry) and Fancy Feast (canned, as a treat only) for Mara; Malaika is on a special renal diet.
Skills: Malaika can eat her dry food with her paws. She knows to lick the bottom of her paw first, then grab a pellet from her bowl and bring it to her mouth. We have it on tape to prove it, too. Mara is pretty secretive about her talents.
Dwells:
indoors
Arrival Story: The Twins (as we refer to them) came into their "Mom's" former workplace (an animal-rights organization) as rescues. They weren't there for 24 hours before Mom laid eyes on them, fell in love, and the rest is history. Dad didn't stand a chance of vetoing the adoption, and Mara and Malaika went home to join big "sisters" Lillie (who recently passed at the age of 18) and Camila (who also passed, only weeks ago, at the age of 13). Life wouldn't be the same without these two little Tortie monsters stirring the pot.
Bio: The Twins have been the brightest spot in our lives for the past 5 years -- they are like our children. When Malaika was diagnosed with chronic renal failure in Nov. of '05, we were devastated but also determined to keep her as comfortable as possible. During the past year, she has undergone six surgeries at NC State, the last of which was to completely remove her left kidney. Currently, she is on daily sub-q fluids as well as other meds, and despite being in end-stage renal failure, she is postively thriving. Her twin, Marty (as we call her) has been by her side the entire time -- we can't imagine life without them, they are so dear to us. Every day with them is an absolute gift.UPDATE: Malaika slipped away from us on Friday, Dec. 29, 2006, at 1:00 am. She went quietly, painlessly, mercifully. She was in the ICU recovering from surgery, and those who were with her (the NC State vet hospital staff loved her, so she was not alone) said that she was literally purring softly one minute, and then arrested. They attempted CPR, but it was "called" shortly thereafter. We are so grateful that she was taken so quickly, without pain, and that she was surrounded by techs and doctors who knew her and loved her. Her twin sister, Mara, is working through this with us. She is grieving as hard as we are, and in time I think that we'll be ok. But we will never, ever forget that little angel (her name is Aramaic for "angel") who brought tremendous joy into our lives, and she will forever be in our hearts. Malaika and Mara will continue to share their page here on Catster -- Mara being very much with us, and Malaika being -- as always -- never too far away from her side.

Catster Loves: Marty is enamored with Captain Jack (arg, mateys!), and Malaika loves Moses.
Our baby sister, Galena, has invited us to play The MeMe game with her. Of course, we're all about a game that is about, well, US, so this should be fun!
THE RULES
Each player starts with seven random facts about themselves. Cats who are tagged need to write about themselves (the seven random facts) as well as the rules in their diary. You need to select seven cats to tag and list their names. Don't forget to leave them a comment (via p-mail) telling them that they've been tagged and that they need to read your diary for more information.
OUR SEVEN FACTS
(MARTY)
1. Mom and Dad began calling me "Marty" because they claim that I remind them of a female Bart Simpson. WhatEVER!
2. I was once rushed to the emergency vet after one of our play strings went missing. They thought that I'd ingested it (why, I don't know). I was poked, prodded, x-rayed, and exploratory surgery was discussed. Mom and Dad took me home to observe me before opting for that latter consideration (whew!). Malaika then proceeded to regurgitate the missing string. They took the wrong cat to the vet!!
3. I LOVE to be loved on when I eat my dry kibble, but leave me alone when I eat my gravy. Go figure.
4. I enjoy waking Mom up at random hours by standing on her chest and demanding to be petted.
5. I don't like to have my feet touched.
6. I will purr at the drop of a hat.
7. I was a super-model in a former life.
(MALAIKA)
1. Mom originally thought that I was a boy when she first met me and Marty -- and my name was going to be "Malachi." Someone quickly set her straight about how rare it is that torties are males.
2. Mom could handle me however -- I was like a loveable little ragdoll. She could kiss me all over and touch my feet, my belly -- anything was cool with me!
3. I LOVED to have my armpits scritched -- Mom has video of it for proof, and one day Dad is going to put it on our Catster page.
4. I could eat my kibble with my paw.
5. I was a lefty, paws down!
6. There was an old soul in me, and everyone who knew me saw it. It was uncanny.
7. I got to where traveling in the car was no big deal. I was fascinated with the big rigs, staring at those giant wheels as we went by.
i carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go,my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)
i fear
no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want

and whatever a sun will always sing is you
here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud

Where have you gone
My love my friend
Somewhere without the rain
I feel afraid now, I feel alone
Will we meet again
Can you recall what we once knew
Somewhere without the pain
I feel afraid now, but not alone
We will meet again
I can't hear your voice
But you know I feel your soul
I can't hear your voice
But you know I feel your soul
Where have you gone
My love my friend
Somewhere without any pain
I'm not afraid now I'm not alone
We will meet again
