BONITA

Bonita, my beauty, my best little friend,
I’ve loved you and loved you, right up to the end.

I guess I thought you’d just live forever,
And you made it to 19, I wanted it to never
Never end, this 9th life of yours
I’ll miss your meows, your love, your purrs.

And I’ll miss your sweet face while you sat on my knee
Those pretty green eyes just gazing at me
With love and affection, and always with trust
I didn’t want to let you go, but knew that I must…

You endured all the surgeries, and pills galore
You took them so well, but now there’s no more
No more suffering…no hurting…and now no more pain…
You’ve gone to the Rainbow Bridge, a new life to gain.

You’ll meet with your sisters and brother and mother,
And look up your old friend Fred, and maybe some other.
You’ll find all your Catster friends who’ve gone on before,
And make lots of new friends up there on that shore.

And I know you’ll be waiting and watching for me
I’ll never forget you—I wish it could be
That you were still here with me so that every day
I’d see your pretty face,
But I know that it must be this way.

You gave me so much across all these years,
I’ll have a hard time now, to see through my tears
But I’ll always love you, my little fur friend,
And keep you in my heart right up to the end.

Good-bye, Sweet Bonita…til we meet again.

My Tail of Devotion for In Loving Memory of Bonita

I first saw this precious kitty when she was born in my bathroom on May 30, 1987! I fell in love with her right away. She was always quite a character, and my best friend from then on. She was healthy and happy all her life, up until February 2006. She developed an abcess under her eye. The vet drained the abcess and put her on antibiotics. She seemed to be doing fine until a month later. The swelling came back. This time the vet discovered she had 2 badly abcessed teeth. He removed them and flushed out the pocket and put her on more antibiotics. A month later, she seemed to be back to her old self (almost). But then she started having trouble eating. The vet decided he needed to scrape her jawbone & remove dead bone chips. He did that...more antibiotics. She really never recovered from this surgery. And about 3 weeks ago, she was having trouble eating...pawing at her mouth...we took her to a different vet. He discovered what he thought was a squamous cell carcinoma in the area where the teeth were removed. He took a tissue sample, but couldn't see any cancer cells, so he and we hoped it was just a scar-tissue tumor. That was last Friday (5 days ago). Today (July 5th) we took her back because she got where she could hardly eat at all, had trouble drinking, and her nose was very congested. He said the tumor had grown a lot in just 5 days, and seemed to be spreading inward. He was afraid it had gone into her nose area and maybe other places. She was so weak and tired of fighting...tired of being poked and prodded and pilled all the time...she just lost her fighting spirit. The vet said we might be able to keep her alive another couple of weeks, but she didn't have a life any more. She was becoming more miserable every day. So today, July 5, 2006, we finally decided to let her go on to the Rainbow Bridge and look for her sister and her old friend, Fred. And meet up with all her Catster friends who went before her. I am going to miss my little best ever fur friend so much that my heart hurts...but it was breaking my heart to see her struggling and trying so hard to survive...and it just wasn't working. It would have been hard on a much younger cat, all the things that she endured these past months...and it was too much for a 19-year old...even a tough one! You'll always live in my heart, my sweet Bonita!

Who would have ever thought I'd make it to age 19?! Although I've been healthy all my life, and have had a very interesting life, thus far, these past few months have been really tough. I got an abcess underneath my left eye in February. Two vets checked it and one couldn't figure out what it was. Said it would proably open up on its own and go away! It didn't! The other vet decided it was an abcess...."masked me down" (he said)...and drained the abcess & put me on antibiotics. I felt pretty good for about a month...and it came back! This time the vet found I had two badly abcessed teeth, which had seemed fine a month before! He got them both out and flushed out the area again...more antibiotics (YUK!)...and I was feeling pretty good. But my mouth never had healed altogether in that spot! So last Wednesday, he "masked me down again" (this is a lot of "masking" for someone as old as I am!)...and he removed some bone chips from the area and scraped the jawbone (that' s what they tell me anyway). I've been on antibiotics AGAIN for another week...last ones tomorrow. I'm feeling pretty good...but think the antibiotics are starting to make me have a tummy-ache!
But today is my 19th birthday!!! My mom asked if I'd like to have a party and invite all my catster friends, but I didn't really feel up to a party today. Guess I'll just try to relax and have a nice, quiet day at home. My mom is going to bring me some birthday treats, and I hope I can eat them!
I'm going to keep hangin' on as long as possible! If I can just get my mouth healed and healthy again, I think I'll be fine!
