Arrival Story:
Shorty came to me with her BFF and hubby/brother Mr. Gotti as rescues from a Los Angeles area pound. They lived in cages next to each other so they were pals already. Their personalities (catalities?) wouldn't be more different though. Whilst Gotti was one cool customer seemingly older than his years who knew he was the cat's pyjamas, Shorty was a typical kitty; she'd get into everything while she explored her new environment and made a mess wherever she went. Curiosity didn't kill this cat, but she 'killed' almost everything she decided to explore. And whole she aged physically over the years, she never really aged mentally and still has a certain kitten quality about her. So much so, that one of her nicknames is Rome (as in the eternal city but in the case of Shorty, she's the eternal kitty. She's also been a real dadda's girl. Whilst Gotti always acted aloof and like he didn't give a hoot about 'needing' me, Shorty was the opposite...a tad needy perhaps but mainly she just showed me as much love as I showed her. She was totally devoted to Gotti, but she makes no secret about her love for me.

Bio:
Heaven...must be missing an angel. And she just said goodbye and went there to take her place aside her old man, Mr. Gotti (who died of cancer in late 2007). About a year ago, she went deaf and whilst at the vet I decided that since she was there, she should get the works: a full physical, blood tests and dental (during the checkup, they found some rotten teeth that the vet advised pulling). She was otherwise in pretty good health but the routine blood tests revealed some troubling results about her kidney functions. It wasn't dire news, but the vet told me she should go on a prescription diet of Renal food. They advised bringing her back in a year to check her kidney levels again and see if they were holding steady with the new diet or if they were getting worse. Sadly, two months ago, she started having trouble eating and drinking. She still had an appetite but it was like, she couldn't actually bear to eat the food or drink water despite the desire to. A trip to the vet revealed that she was severely dehydrated and her kidney functions were not good. She spent four days at the vet on an IV getting rehydrated and released back to me when her kidney functions were normal (well, back to where they were before the current crisis) with instructions to give her subcutaneous IV fluids once a day. She appeared to be much improved and she was eating and drinking again so I was confident that we'd managed to put the brakes on the decline. I was then instructed to bring her back in 10 days to see if we could reduce the fluids to every other and and see about letting her eat some of her fave foods since she was obviously not too enthusiastic about the Renal prescription food as her only choice. After telling the vet how she seemed to be doing a lot better and had regained some of her lost weight, he seemed optimistic but that only lasted an hour as he called me with the blood test results which showed her kidneys were failing faster than her behaviour would suggest. He gave her a couple of months to live. So here we are: she's home and we're using the time to left say goodbye (something I didn't get with Mr. Gotti as his death was so sudden). We're spending a lot of quality time together while we wait for her to let me know it's time for her to go. She's getting lots of TLC and I'm spoiling her rotten. For her part, despite her general lethargy (she is about 18 after all) and other age-related issues (she's a bit shaky on her old legs) she seems pretty contented over all and she's hanging in there. I don't intend to put he through hell of stuff like permanent hospitalisation, forced feeding and a permanent tube for fluids -I know a lot of people go to extraordinary lengths to keep their loved ones alive, but what kind of life is that for a kitty? She's had a good life and I'm sure she'll be in good hands when she shuffles of to join her main man -Mr Gotti- in the afterlife. It's terribly sad to think about losing my main squeeze, but after what I went through with Gotti, I think I'm going to be able to handle her approaching death without getting too emo.
