Arrival Story:
In addition to having recently lost my best friend and beloved companion, Barney (see his profile at Dogster), my ex-boyfriend (J) began working evening shifts, leaving me at home alone for a great part of the day (I shouldn't say alone; I did have four sweet pet rats.) In any case, I had been for a while considering getting a cat. Though I was a self-proclaimed "dog person", my living arrangments at the time were not appropriate for a puppy. I grew up in the country and would feel guilty keeping a dog in a small apartment in the middle of the city. I dragged J to the SPCA and another local (no kill) shelter. The cats were nice, but not what I was looking for. I wanted small, dark, and short-haired... all I found were huge, light-coloured and HAIRY ! I had intended on adopting an adult cat, but none of them fit the bill; then the shelter attendant led me to a back room to show me some ten-week-old kittens. As soon as we walked in, J said "Uh-oh !" and I knew immediatetly to what he was referring. Of all the little, mewling kittens, my eyes zeroed in on the one that was set apart from the group... curled up, asleep, in its bed. Sure enough, it was tiny and black. Its littermates were undeniably gorgeous: there was a black long-haired girl, and some long-haired tabbies with faces like wildcats ! But I gravitated toward the sleepy kitten, picking her up. When I was told she was a girl, I was a bit disappointed, as I've long had male pets and thought them to be more affectionate. But- of course- we ended up bringing her home ... she was just too sweet ! I christened her Pola, after a dark and exotic silent film actress I admire. She took to her home and to us immediately - J and I couldn't have asked for a more perfect little friend !

Bio:
She LOVES to play with bits of sponge (I should explain now that I, her Mum, indulge in the habit of chewing on said sponges. Hey- it's helping me quit smoking !) Pola will seek 'em out anywhere in the house and proceed to shred them into microscopic pieces (sometimes stuffing the remnants into the toe of my shoe !) If she's given a whole sponge, she'll invariably attack it; when her claw gets stuck in it, she'll stand on her hind legs and wave her arm wildly, like a mad orchestral conductor ! Update :When Jay and I broke up I relocated to Montreal, bringing Silas with me. I made the tough decision, however, to leave Pola in Halifax. Though it breaks my heart to be away from her I know she's being well loved and is, in turn, providing invaluable companionship for Jay. She's still my *first* baby girl and I think of her daily.
