News on Maizie

Another hot day today, too hot for us to want to go out until it got cooler, even Ollie went out. He may not be all there but he did like it outside.
Mom kept herself busy today as she was dreading taking Maizie to vets.
Maizie is much brighter today, she has been chatting to mom more and she has been eating a tiny amount of biscuits, so mom has stoppped syringe feeding her in the hope she will eat more, she has also been drinking more.
At the vets, mom saw her regular vet that has been seeing us for over 10 years and what a difference it made. He had a look at Maizies teeth that the other vet said was where the infection was probably coming from and he totally disagreed, her teeth are not very bad for her age. The vet then checked her blood results and said it shows that Maizie had a very nasty renal infection. He checked her temperature which is still a little high. She has to continue with her medication for another week to make sure it is totaly gone and he dosnt expect to see her back, even tho she is very pretty. surgery. Mom said she will always check to see which vet is on before she books an appointment. Mom finds it hard to believe that Maizie came so close to having surgery that she didnt need and believing that she had a horrible abcess somewhere that worried us so much. We found out this eve, the vet that mom first saw has now left the practice.
When Maizie got back from the vets she ate a few more bics and had a good drink. For those of you who do not know who Maizie is, she is under 'meet my family', the cute little tuxie in the basket.

Cats have about 100 different vocalisation sounds. In comparison, dogs have about 10.

A cats hearing is incredibly sharp. They can recognize their owners footsteps from hundreds of feet away.

Though cats have an incredible sense of hearing, and it takes a kitten about two weeks to begin to hear well.

Cats are said to see colour. Studies have been able to prove that cats can distinguish between red and green; red and blue; red and gray; green and blue; green and gray; blue and gray; yellow and blue, and yellow and gray.

Although cats can see in color, they are partially color-blind. They have the equivalency of human red/green color blindness. (Reds appear green and greens appear red; or shades thereof.)

Cats have a full inner-eyelid, or nictitating membrane. This inner-eyelid serves to help protect the eyes from dryness and damage. When the cat is ill, the inner-eyelid will frequently close partially, making it visible to the observer.

Most cats have no eyelashes.

You can tell a cat's mood by looking into its eyes. A frightened or excited cat will have large, round pupils. An angry cat will have narrow pupils. The pupil size is related as much to the cat's emotions as to the degree of light.

Whiskers tell a cat whether the space they are entering is big enough for it. Blizzards must be really long!!!!

The bottom two rows of whiskers on a cat can move independently of the top two rows.

Ailurophilia means "the love of cats". People who like cats are called ailurophiles.

Ailurophobia means "the fear of cats". People who fear cats are called ailurophobes.

Its been hot and sticky here today and its going to be another sticky night. I am in the cat house as I had an accident on the bed, well, when you gotta go...... but dad wasnt impressed. What do they need bed covers for anyway ????? its too hot!!!
Maizie is drinking a bit more today but she still will not eat for herself so mom is still syringe feeding. She is looking more brighter and beginning to chat to mom a bit. Maizie is going to the vets tomorrow evening to see how she is doing and to have that stick thing up her bottom to check her temperature. We just wish she would eat for herself.
Mom had to go to work today, so she hasnt been home long, she said all the cats at work are fine and 4 of them will be going in for dentals on thursday.

Cats can "read" your moods. If you're sad or stressed, you may also notice a difference in your cat's behavior.

Cats knead with their paws when they're happy.

A cat will almost never "meow" at another cat. This sound is reserved for humans.

Cats do not think that they are little people. They think that we are big cats. This influences their behavior in many ways.

Contrary to popular belief, the cat is a social animal. A pet cat will respond and answer to speech, and seems to enjoy human companionship.

Cats can purr to express pain or fear in addition to expressing pleasure. Female cats often purr when they are in labour, as well as when they are nursing their kittens.

A cat's sense of smell is 14 times stronger than a human's.

Besides their noses, cats can smell with something called the "Jacobson's organ", located in the upper surface of their mouths. This is what cats are using when they scrunch up their eyes and open their mouths after sniffing something intently.

The nose pad of a cat is ridged in a pattern that is unique, just like the fingerprint of a human.

A cat cannot see directly under its nose. This is why the cat cannot seem to find tidbits on the floor. Unless your called Blizzard!!!!

Cats have 32 muscles in each ear.

Cats respond most readily to names that end in an "ee" sound.

Cats have about 100 different vocalisation sounds. In comparison, dogs have about 10.

Quick Update

Just a quick update before we loose internet connection.
Maizie is a litle brighter today, showing more interrest in what is going on. Hopefully the fever is breaking. She is still having to be syringe fed, she is a good girl and dosnt struggle. We have our paws crossed that she starts eating for herself very soon.
We are sure your love and purrs are helping her to get through this.
She really needs to improve more before she goes in for surgery so she has the best chance. She has lost a lot of weight (she used to be quite chubby), Maybe Blizard could share his mouse pouches with her!
Thank you for your continued support, Catsters friends are the best.

a little more trivia

There are more than 500 million domestic cats in the world, with 33 different breeds.

The American cat population reached nearly 68 million in 1996. American Demographics magazine estimates that's about 200 million kitty yawns per hour and a whopping 425 million catnaps each day!

An average cat has 1 to 8 kittens per litter, and 2 to 3 litters per year.

During her productive life, one female cat could have more than 100 kittens.

In 1952, a Texas Tabby named Dusty set the record by having more than 420 kittens before having her last litter at age 18.

A single pair of cats and their kittens can produce as many as 420,000 kittens in just seven years. Please spay or neuter your pet.

The largest known litter (with all surviving) was that of a Persian in South Africa named Bluebell. Bluebell gave birth to 14 kittens in one litter.

If left to her own devices, a female cat may have three to seven kittens every four months. This is why population control using neutering and spaying is so important.

The most prolific cat was a tabby named Dusty of Bonham, she lived in Texas, and produced 420 kittens during her life time.

The oldest feline mother Kitty, owned by George Johnstone of England produced in May 1987, two kittens at age 30. She died just short of her 32nd birthday, having given birth to a known total of 218 kittens during her lifetime.

The smallest cat breed is the Singapura. Males weigh about six pounds while females weigh about four pounds.

The heaviest domestic cat on record was a neutered male tabby named Himmy, weighing in at 46 lb. 15 ½ oz. (neck 15 in., waist 33 in., length 38 in.)

The smallest domestic cat on record was a male blue point Himalayan-Persian cat named Tinker Toy, is just 2 ¾ in. tall and 7 ½ in. long.

The smallest species of cat is native to Africa: the Black-Footed Cat (Felis Nigripes). Its top weight is 5.5 pounds which is considerably smaller than the average housecat.

Thank you for your continued purrs and gifts for Maizie.
Maizie still has a fever and she is still being syringe fed. Mom did see her have a little drink of water and use the litter tray so we hope the medication is beginning to kick in. Mom was up and down checking on Maizie all night and she had to go to work this morning, so she is pretty tired, but Maizie is her main concern and we are all very worried.
On a sad note, when mom came home froom work, she fed us and Maizie and then went to clean out and feed the rabbits only to find that one of them had died during the morning, we dont know why, Bramble has shown no signs of illness, her sister Bracken is very quiet so is gettiing extra fuss and a little extra carrot. Hopefully we will be able to bond her to another little bunny we have called Sky.
Thank you again for the purrs.

More Cat Trivia

Scientific studies have compared and examined both a cat's brain and a dog's brain. The results established that the cat's brain is more similar to a humans than that of a dog.

Almost 10% of a cat's bones is in its tail. The cat's body contains 245 bones, but as they age some of the bones fuse together and the number of bones decreases.

Cats have only thirty teeth. Kittens have baby teeth which are replaced by permanent fangs at around seven months of age.

Cats wag their tails when it is in a stage of conflict. The cat wants to do two things at once, but each impulse blocks the other. For example: If your cat is in the doorway wanting to go outside, and you open the door to find it raining, the cat's tail will wag because of internal conflict. The cat wants to go outside, but doesn't want to go into the rain. Once the cat makes a decision and either returns to the house or leaves into the rain, the tail will immediately stop wagging.

If your cat is near you, and her tail is quivering, this is the greatest expression of love your cat can give you. If her tail starts thrashing, her mood has changed and it's time to distance yourself from her.

The domestic cat is the only species able to hold its tail vertically while walking. Wild cats hold their tail horizontally, or tucked between their legs while walking.

There are more than 500 million domestic cats in the world, with 33 different breeds.

Thank you all for your purrs for Maizie.
Maizie is still being syringe fed water and food aand she still has a fever. Her results came back this afternoon. Her white blood cell count is very low and they say that she has a massive infection somewhere inside, poss from an abcess. Her kidneys are also showing signs of dehydration, so we are working hard on getting more fluids into her. Mom picked up some more medicatiion for her this afternoon in the hope we can stablize Maizies condition. She will go to the vets on monday for a check up and to make sure her fever has gone down. If she is stable, she will be going in for surgery as soon as poss, she has a couple of dodgy teeth that might be causing the problem, they are not really bad but that is all the vets has to go on at the moment.
We are purring really hard that Maizie stablizies very soon and starts eating and drinking foor herself.

Sorry no triva tonight as mom is busy with mazie.

Purrs Needed

Sorry to have to ask, but if any cat has some spare purrs we could sure do with some.
Maizie had to go to the vets today. In her 10 years she has never had to go to the vets because she was not well, but the last few days she stopped eating, mom put it down to the weather as we have all been a little picky but then she stopped drinking and using the litter tray. Mom started syringe feeding her water last night and this morining until she could get maizie to the vets.
Maizie had an appointment at 2.00pm this afternoon. She has a high temperature and is a little dehydrated, she had some blood taken from her neck to send off for tests, they marked it urgent, so hopefully the results will be back tomorrow. The vets gave her a shot of anti-biotics and a shot of metacam. Mom has to syringe feed water to maizie every hour and also syringe food into her so her liver dosnt get affected. She dose look sorry for herself but she dose look a little brighter and has started drinking a little water for herself. Fingers crossed she has just got a little infection, but shes a litle floppy when shes held wobbly on her legs and very quiet. We have never known maizie to be ill and it is very worrying for us.
Any puur would be much appriciated.
Today the weather has been dry, seems like the first day for ages but we havent been out much, we wanted to stay in for maizie. This weather dosent help us much, one day it sticky the next day its cold, no wonder we get a little sick.

More triva

The largest litter of kittens on record is 19, from a Burmese/Siamese cat in 1970.

Don't pick a kitten or a cat up by the scruff of its neck; only mother cats can do this safely, and only with their kittens.

Calico cats are almost always female. The gene in cats that causes the orange coat color is sexed linked, and is on the X sex chromosome. This gene may display orange or black. Thus, as female cat with two X chromosomes may have orange and black colors in its coat. A male, with only one X chromosome, can have only orange or black, not both.

If a male cat is both orange and black it is (besides being extremely rare) sterile. To have both the orange and the black coat colors, the male cat must have all or part of both female X chromosomes. This unusual sex chromosome combination will render the male cat sterile.

Cats have true fur, in that they have both an undercoat and an outer coat.

The color of the points in Siamese cats is heat related. Cool areas are darker.

A cat's heart beats twice as fast as a human heart, at 110 to 140 beats per minute.

Cats have 290 bones in their bodies, and 517 muscles.

A cat has five more vertebrae in its spinal column than a human does.

Cats have AB blood groups just like humans.

Cats lack a true collarbone. Because of this lack, cats can generally squeeze their bodies through any space they can get their heads through. You may have seen a cat testing the size of an opening by careful measurement with the head.

Fed up!!

Yep, I am well and truley fed up......its been wet and mom has been at work and to make matters worse, the weather people have just said that its going to rain for the next month in the UK. Just great!!!!
I got so bored today, I went and watched dad tidy up the garage. That wasnt all that fun, dust everywhere, I had to come in and spend ages grooming to get the dirt out of my fur.

More triva.....

There are two species of wild cats in African and Europe that still hunt - these two species both resemble domestic tabbies.

The behaviors shown by most house cats have a parallel in the wild.

Most cats with orange fur are male. It is extremely rare for a female cat to have orange fur.

The oldest cat on record was Puss, from England, who died in 1939 just one day after her 36th birthday.

The strangest cat on record was a female called Mincho who went up a tree in Argentina and didn't come down again until she died six years later. While treed, she managed to have three litters with equally ambitious dads.

A cat will kill it's prey based on movement, but may not necessarily recognize that prey as food. Realizing that prey is food is a learned behavior.

A cat's eyes, whiskers, and ears will tell you what "mood" your cat is in. ( Blizzards always tell you that hes hungry as he has 6 mouse pouches to keep in shape!!)

The greatest number of mice killed by one cat is 28,899. Towser, a tortoise-shell tabby in charge of rodent control in Scotland, killed 28,899 mice in her 21 years. This is about four mice per day, every day, for 21 years. Towser died in 1987.

The first cat show was held in 1895 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York.

A falling cat will always right itself in a precise order. First the head will rotate, then the spine will twist and the rear legs will align, then the cat will arch its back to lessen the impact of the landing.

"Sociable" cats will follow you from room to room to monitor your activities throughout the day.

Siamese kittens are born white because of the heat inside the mother's uterus before birth. This heat keeps the kittens' hair from darkening on the points.

Puter problems

We are still having puter problems, well, conection problems. Its hit and miss when we can get on.
Been a quiet couple of days, wet yeesturday and today I sat next to dad most of the day, watching Tour de France. Mom haas beenn sleeping most of the day as shes feeling very tierd.
So I though it was time to stimulate our owners brains withh some facts and triva!!!!

A group of adult cats is known as a clowder or a pounce. A group of kittens is a kindle, a litter, or an intrigue!

Cats were so loved by the Egyptians that they sometimes mummified a mouse to accompany the cat into the afterworld.

The small patch of white fur on a cat's chest is known as a "locket".

Cats are the sleepiest of all mammals. If you total up all the cat naps, your cat sleeps about 16 hours a day!

Cats offer sandpaper kisses due to tiny knobs called papillae on the surface of their tongues. They are shaped like backward hooks and are designed to hold food and to provide the abrasiveness cats need for good grooming.

Cats do walk differently from dogs! Cats, along with giraffes and camels, are the only animals with a gait in which front and hind legs move together first on one side, then on the other. Cats also are the only clawed creatures that walk on their claws rather than their paw pads. Cats are frequently born with six or more toes on one paw.

Cats’ whiskers, so long and stiff, should never be trimmed. Cats use their whiskers to find their way in the dark, determine whether or not he/she can get into or out of a tight place, and a host of other navigation tasks. (Blizzards must be huge!!!)

Cats can’t really see in the dark and their daytime vision is best described as “fair” – but they can see better than their human families in semidarkness. Their eyes don’t really shine in the dark, either. Cats’ eyes contain highly reflective cells that collect light from very dim sources. When you flash a light on a cat in the darkness, these reflective cells make it appear that their eyes are glowing. Long thought to be color-blind, recent studies indicate that cats can distinguish between some basic colors when these colors are paired.

A cat’s hearing rates as one of the sharpest in all the animal kingdom. If you cat is always waiting for you at the door, the reason is that he or she can hear your footsteps from hundreds of feet away.

A domestic cat has eighteen claws: five on each of its front paws and four on each of its back paws.

People who own pets live longer, have less stress, and have fewer heart attacks.

Cats love to chew on grass, catnip, cat-thyme, parsley or sage.

More to follow tomorrow

The sun came out to play, yay!!!
I have been out for most of the day, lounging, its what we cats are good at.
Then I spotted something new.....I had to investigate......'sniff, nip!!!
Mom had put out a new catnip plant and forgot to put it out of reach.....yep, you guessed it...I had a rub and a nibble and before I knew was just a twig in a pot!
I got carried away, it was just so nice. Mom came out to check on me and she caught me with the twig in my mouth.
'it just jumped into my mouth' I tried to explain 'there was nothing I could do to stop it' I said in my cutest meow. She didnt go for it, now the twig in the pot has been put out of reach!
Today would have been Circles 9th Birthday, so I would like to raise a toast to our 'sweet angel', we love you and miss you little girl, you were someone very special.

DDP and a Yeti!!!

[ Leave A Comment | 6 people already have ]

Wow, DDP! Thank you so much for the honour and thank you all for the comments, paw mails and gifts, I love each and everyone of you.
Its been warm and humid here for what seems like ages but I look into the sky and see nothing but cloud, then it rains and gets even warmer.
We wanted to go out this morning but mom was having a lie in as she didnt sleep well because its been so warm at night.
So we sneaked upstairs to wake mom up and guess what we saw.......bed mice, all lined up asleep and ready to be caught! We have seen bed mice moving under the covers but not out in the open like this, it was too good to miss. We lined up, crouched down, did the bum wiggle and pounced!!!!!!!!
What happened next scared the whiskers off us..........there was a blood curdling noise from the top of the bed and all of a sudden this monster yeti sat up, hair everywhere, face like a bulldog chewing a wasp, it was scary. Where was mom when you needed her? We ran out of the room as fast as our paws would carry us. We heard noises coming from the bedroom, I had to go and take another look. I crept closer to the doorway only to see mom sat on the bed rubbing her eyes! Where did the yeti go? We searched the house and could find no yeti. We will not try and catch the bed mice for a while just in case the yeti turns up again. It was scarier than disturbing Blizzard when hes eating.

In the beginning, there was the heaven and the earth, and a cold breeze was blowing. This sucked, and the Lord was displeased. And the Lord said, "Let there be kitties!" and there were kitties, with whiskers and fuzzy ears, who twitched their tail-tips adorably, and it was good.
But the Lord wanted more. So the Lord said, "Let there be stripes!" and most of the kitties received this blessing, and showed off their precious, adorably cuddly tabby coats. And this was good.

So the kitties romped and played, but they became hungry, and asked the Lord for help. So the Lord said, "Let there be all manner of creatures from which the kitties can feed from!" And there were, and a wide variety of animals came into existence, whom the kitties hunted and played with. And this was good.

But the kitties were still bored. So The Lord said, "Let there be humans!" and the humans came into existence, to forever be slaves of the adorable whiskered kitties and entertain them until the end of time. And it was good. The Lord was happy, so he retired and went to Florida.
