About 25 years ago a student walked into my classroom holding in her hands a little tiny, all gray, fluffy kitten who looked just like a ball of dust. She was in tears because she had to find that kitten a home. My home became his home and I named him Misha. When he died at 18, I missed him terribly, but I had another cat with the sweetest disposition, so I enjoyed her solo company for a year when she succumbed to illness.
After a few weeks I decided to look for another kitten. During a break at work, I called an animal control officer I knew and left a message saying I wanted a kitten. Then I returned to my classroom. As I sat down, a student who had already graduated came in holding in her hands a little tiny, all gray, fluffy kitten who looked just like a ball of dust. She had no way of knowing I was looking for a kitten. But there she was just moments after my call, putting this fluff ball on my desk and asking "Do you want this kitten?" This was only the second time that I knew of someone bringing a kitten into the school to find it a home... and the kitten she brought was the image of his great gray predecessor.
I nodded my head without a word, and took the mischievous kitten into my life, and named him Spirit because everything about his arrival invokes the spirit of his predecessor, Misha, that I loved so much.
