Arrival Story:
We first met Dolly in May of 2012. She had probably been dumped at the farm, but was very afraid of people and behaved like a feral. She was also pregnant. Shortly after, she gave birth to two babies in the hayloft. During the next three weeks, she kept moving them often. At one time they even stopped a massive construction project because she was hiding her little ones in the landfill! On May 29, 2012, she carried a desperately ill three week old Phoenix up to the water trough by the barn. Dropping her there, she meowed loudly towards a group of students, then ran away. It was as tough she knew her little one was dying and hoped we could save her. By doing that, she saved her baby's life. A month later, we TNRed Dolly and she became a part of the barn colony. But she was never comfortable there, kept away from other kitties and the people, preferring the loft. Then in February 2014 Stephanie noticed Dolly was sick. It took a few days to trap her, but when we got her to the vet they confirmed she was terribly ill with an URI - and had FeLV. We chose to treat her anyway and over the next month, a very lovely and sweet affectionate Dolly emerged from this little fearful feline. Then came the question of what to do. With the love and support of friends everywhere, we raised funds and took Dolly to Rustic-Hollow Sanctuary in Iowa. She traveled there on March 25, 2014. Her picture here is from the last morning I would see her. She loved Rustic Hollow and the people there. She purred all the time and cuddled on laps. But she also was frail and her URI came back very soon. In spite of medication and all the care and love, she was ready to go to the bridge. She passed peacefully on the lap of her caregiver, purring as she went, on the evening of April 29, 2014. Fly free, little Dolly, know a peace of contentment that this life could never give you.
