Arrival Story: On this date Thursday Oct. 27, 2011 we haven't officially *got* Dalton yet. He was rescued off the streets, as a 2 week old baby all by himself & the lady took him to the shelter as she couldn't keep him. Our friend immediately pulled him to foster so he wouldn't get any germs at the shelter & we told her he was ours!!! So he still needs to finish up with his neutering & shots & we go & pick him up on Saturday the 29th of Nov. 2011. I will add to this (or amend) after that date.
Bio: According to his foster mommy, Dalton who, for the time with her was called Maestro, was a live wire! Very playful, an incredibly fast learner & loves to cuddle every chance he gets. He has a huge appetite which likely means he will eventually be a big boy too.
Anyone who has now watched the Wild Child video will see that the 'live wire' description is alive & well...the only changes made are size!
And yet the saddest amendment to Dalton's story. One I could not have imagined writing just six months ago. We lost our baby Dalton yesterday, Sunday March 18, 2012.
As lively as he was & as big an impact he had on everyone's life both here & at home, no=one knew what was hiding in his tiny body.
But let me start back on Feb 24... Our little Friskies vacuum started turning his nose up at his food. All of it. His favorites, the ice cream dishes he liked to lick...just everything. Of course after a couple of days of this we made an appointment to see his vet. She did all the usual things, checked everything - urine & a stool samples, checked his ears eyes the whole routine to see what could be wrong. But nothing showed up, nor did he have a fever. Yet he continued to be more & more listless & that bright pink little nose of his became paler & paler.
When the blood test came back everyone was almost knocked to the floor! Dalton had virtually no red blood cells! The doc said she was surprised he was even able to stand he was so anemic. So off to Critical Care for emergency blood transfusions. After his first fusion, he rallied enough that they were able to get a bone marrow sampling & they sent it out. This result was his death sentence. Dalton had a genetic flaw - his body wasn't manufacturing red blood cells. Without that happening, he would surely die. To have transfusions every day (@ a thousand dollars a pop) would still only prolong his death by optimistically 2 weeks. We asked about bone marrow transplants & were told that they hadn't had much success with that in smaller animals. Some had been performed on expensive race horses but even then not with the best results.
So...we laid his little bed buddy beside him & at 9:40 a.m. he passed peacefully over the Rainbow Bridge.
This has been a horrific 13 months for us. First Jakey in February, followed by Bailey in June. But as sad as their passings were, they'd both had 14 years of life to enjoy. Dalton was only just 6 months old! We feel so angry & so cheated that we couldn't have given him the long happy life our others enjoy. We never got the chance to see if he'd grow to be that 'big boy' everyone predicted. And I never got to hold him & love him for possibly 20 years.
RIP Dalton & know that I will love you always & forever. You were a special little boy.
Forums Motto: Why does everyone keep calling me Yoda?
Milo 'n' me hads ar first Chrismus, 'n' we want to have those every day now! Oooooooh, I LUFS Chrismus! LUFS, LUFS, LUFS, LUFS it!!!
This is such a fun holly day!
Mom said it would be but she didn't prepare me for dis! Pressies & turkey...gravy & a tree! Dad made this big fire in the hole in the wall & it was sooooooo cool! Well it was hot but cool too...I wuffed it! Den we all puts stockin's up on the mantle & we goes to bed. In da morningtime Milo opens his pressie & gots a tomato - I gots a catnip ball in my stockin', Trey gots a banana & Darius gots a lemon - they all smells so goooood! I know Mom got pix of us all so I bet she's gonna share them soon.
I do hope everybody had as much fun as we's did. You gotta tell me! I'm gonna start a fan club for Chrismus!
Now Mom is talkin' 'bout New Ears or sumpin like dat? I'm not sure I'll like that 'cuz I already likes my ears but I'll wait & see that they are...anyway...
I'z not much good at spellin the words so Milo is helpin' me out right now...Mom too. It's amazing how she can read my mind just by me sittin' curled up on her lap here. I think life should be pretty good in this house.
I need to tell you about the horr'ble ride here wif the snow fallin' - trees too & right in front of our car. The big trucks kept frowin' snow at our window & that scared me lots, but new Mom let me sit on her lap when that happened & I got instantly brave. =^..^=
Whe we got to my new house everybody met us at the door when we came in...**JUMPIN' JEHOSACAT** they were all so big, 'specially Trey & I thought ohoh, I was sunk. But Darius was real friendly & gave me a lick-kiss on da top of my head, then told the others to back off & before long, I was sharing supper with Dar & Milo.
You wouldn't believe the baskets of toys here!!!! I took one look & runned right over & jumped into one! Everybody laughed hard so I did it again. And raggedy towers everywhere. And they have soft kitty cookies too!!! I'm allowed to have them!!! Yup, life is gonna be purrrretty darn good I'm thinking.
Trey has been helpful too. He told me that since he'd outgrown his bed & nobody else was using it...it's mine!!He's very important here so he acts sort of aloof but I can tell he'll look out for me if I get in trouble. He tol' me I better come to Catster & introduce myselse so fur-peoples don't think I'm rude or offish. I really want to meet everybody now that Trey has told me about how nice it is at Catster too. I look forward to growing up wif yinz...
