Arrival Story:
On Monday August 29, 2011, the morning after Hurricane Irene blew through, I stopped at the local Stop & Shop to get a hot cup of coffee when I couldn't find a way out of my town to get to work. Wandering though the parking lot was this small, emaciated black cat. I crouched down maybe 10 feet away from him and he mewed and ran over to me. He was obviously starving and very friendly. I went into the store and bought coffee and a can of cat food and when I came out he was sitting under the front of my car. I went to him, opened the can and he ate, so I called my husband and asked him to come with a cat carrier. A second, smelly can of cat tuna lured him into the carrier and we brought him home. We set up a large dog crate we have in the garage and made him a small home. The next day it was to the vet's. He tested negative for feline AIDS and Leukemia, so he got his vaccines, an exam, flea and worm medication, and an appointment to be neutered two days later. The poor guy has very patchy fur, but he seems basically healthy and he is very sweet. He still has to go back to the vet for a booster FVRCP vaccine and maybe to have surgery to remove a polyp in his ear.

Blackberry finally succumbed to his chronic calicivirus and mycoplasma infections on Tuesday, November 12th. We felt that it was no longer fair to him to keep him suffering.
