I used to volunteer at the SF SPCA, and dropped by there one recent weekend to visit a friend. My husband and I had recently lost two old and creaky cats, leaving us with just one at home, and we were ready to adopt again. We'd thought we wanted a tiny kitten, but as we walked around the hallways, Ambrose rolled on his back and showed off his tuxedo and socked paws. He stuck one paw under the door and we were off.
Bio:
Ambrose was a dirty little feral kitten, originally named Hornet, who was rescued by the SPCA along with his littermates from an alley in the Bayview in San Francisco. His siblings were named Wasp, Bee, and Yellowjacket. He is named for the owner of my favorite Malaysian restaurant in London (Ambrose of Kaya House in Deptford) and for Phil Hoffman, SF SPCA cat volunteer extraordinaire, streetcar guru, and all-around mensch.
