This kitty had an unexpected stroke and died in her sleep in the summer of 2012. Rest in peace, beautiful one!
My mother had a cat named Sierra who was lost to intestinal cancer quite suddenly and unexpectedly. My mother was initially hesitant to get another cat, but I had a good sense of the kind of cat who would suit her, elegant, calm, and quiet with a beautiful coat. I searched online at several animal shelters and was very drawn to Sophie (then called Ali). I gave her information to my mom who also was smitten. Then I went and adopted her for my mom from a low-kill public pound. Sophie was very underweight and irritable. She cowered shyily in the back of the cage and made loud frightened whines when I went to pick her up. I almost had second thoughts, but I knew that most people would be put off by her fear and hoped for the best. (She was already declawed, not something I widely advocate but in her case, it probably was the difference between being deemed adoptable vs. unadoptable). She was a tempermental kitty.
With good nutrition, a stable and pleasant home, and constant pampering attention, Sophie is blossoming. She is an absolutely lovely and sweet cat. My mom loves her. (We all do). Some people might not approve of the idea that she was kind of a "gift" from me to my mom, but this is a happy ending. I knew what my mom wanted and I consulted her and got her consent before I drove 4 hours to adopt a cat that we had never met. I am so glad that I did. She wasn't really eating at the shelter and she was so unhappy. It's so heartening to see her happiness now. We look forward to many wonderful years.
We are not amused
