Arrival Story:
Two weeks after graduating from college, I headed to the Albuquerque Humane Society to finally get a cat. I opened the cage next to his and the little girl kitty inside ran and hid under the table. When I opened his cage, he hopped up on my shoulder and sat there like a parrot. I could see there would be no arguing with him--I was to be his human. He was long and tall for 9 weeks, so I thought the AHS was lying to me about his age. He was skinny, mangey, and half-crosseyed and when my mom saw him she said, "That cat is going to die on you." But I fed him and I loved him and it turns out he really was 9 weeks old because he grew and grew and now he's 18 pounds (and his eye is fine now, too). I've taken him with me every time I've moved; from Albuquerque to Southern California to New York to Austin to Northern California... so he and I both feel moving is a terrible excuse to give up a cat.

Bio:
Pot has managed to lose 4 whole pounds on his diet, and while not entirely happy about it, he is healthy and the vet approves. In November (2005), his "pee problem" got worse, and he became blocked. It was a scary time, he had to spend a few days at the v-e-t and had to have a catheter, AND wear one of those humiliating cones on his head. But he has an amazing doctor who pulled him through, and he's now completely recovered. He has to be on a special diet for the rest of his life, wet food that acidifies his urine. This makes him very happy because it is, after all, wet food. With the colder weather he has started a new behavior: challenging himself in the mirror in the dead of night. He'll vocalize, then hop over to the mirror and bash into it. He's a strange boy (who deprives me of sleep!), but I adore him.
