Toby's Diary

Why does my tail squiggle?

Mum was reading a cat book (not her so-called Cat Expert one which is happily gathering dust on a shelf) and she said she was reading a bit about tail communication. I was glad to see that my comments from Monday had not gone on deaf ears.

"You do this, Toby, and I don't think I ever had a cat that did before," she said.

"What's that?"

"When I am about to give you food your tail quivers."

That is true. Whether it's a full bowl of breakfast or a few treats I get all happy inside and my tail does quiver. The book didn't say why though. Does any cat know?

Josie is going a bit stir crazy with not wanting to go outdoors in the cold and there's been lots of dashing around. I like it mostly but yesterday it was too much even for me so I hid under the throw. It worked and Josie had to run around all by herself. Mum found me and seemed to find it amusing that Josie had worn me out.

Our darn guest cat does that too. She used to be a stray, straying around outside with no full food bowls in sight. She says that was terrible. Now she loves food. Neither me nor Timo do that.

I got stir crazy if I can't go outside when it wet and cold. Which is most of time during winter around here. I thought you were meant to wear Josie out not the other way around mate.

As for your quivering tail I've never done or heard of another cat that does it so I can't tell you what they might be.

Well, Toby, the quivering tail is related to territorial marking. When unneutered cats want to claim stuff as their own, they back up to it, quiver their tail and squirt pee on it, just like the big cats in the wild. Fortunately, you are neutered, so you don't do the squirt thing, just the tail thing. I had a sisfur that used to quiver her tail all the time. I myself don't quiver, but then I don't have to - everyone knows that the whole world belongs to me.

Unbelievable, Monster. Our darn guest cat's tail quivers when Mom dishes out the food (not always, but often). Is she marking the whole kitchen as her territory? I hope not. She's not supposed to have a territory here.

Thanks for that Monster. It is true that when food is on the horizon I am very keen to make sure everyone knows it's MINE!! And mum says then that is another very good reason why she's glad she had me neutered. Purrs Toby

Well I quiver my tail when I am getting treats so it may be more than just marking. I really get it going when I am standing on my rears paws reaching up leaning on the cabinet in the kitchen. I do this every day with Pops.

Females also mark so it is not just a Tomcat quiver.

Sounds like it would make a good song.

What Monster said makes sense. Both of my brofurs do the TomCat Quiver, but neifur one of them squirts pee when they do it. Maybe it is a boy cat thing? Neifur my sisfur Daisy or myself do the quiver, but then again, we KNOW that efurrything in this house is OURS! MOL! ConCATulations on being chosen as a Daily Diary Pick again today ROCK! Purrlease enjoy your day in the spotlight!!!
