It was all sunny and warm at the weekend. Us cats love the sunny and warm but it does keep the frogs in the dampness of their ponds so I turned my attention to the birds.
The trouble with birds, and the reason I've never caught one, is that they fly high. How to reach them? Then I had a clever idea.
We have a big bush in our garden. My mum has been chopping at it but only as high as she can reach and some of the spikes stretch right up and the birds gather on these branches to have a chat about this and that, believing themselves to be safe from the likes of me.
So if I could stealthily climb those branches I would grab one of those birds and be home with my meal before any of the others knew what was going on.
Where the plan went wrong - apparently I weigh rather more than the average bird. The lower branches were fine but when I got higher, in tantalisingly close proximity to my prey, the branches wobbled and the birds flew away. Actually they made so much noise my mum came out to see what was going on. It took her a while to spot me through the leaves.
So I did not catch anything except flying leaves at the weekend. I still get a kick out of running in enthusaistically with a large leaf in my mouth, to watch mum run for the frog catching kit only to realise she has been fooled again!

I used to be a champion bird killer - better luck next time!
Catching a leaf is better than catching a cold mate. I tried catching a bird one and mum whooped my backside so hard I never did again. The only thing I've managed to catch is a computer mouse. I don't even catch a cold that well.
It's a good thing Da Tabbies o Trout Towne (no longer on Catster) never heard you talk about catching birds! They hate those things!
You get an A+ for ideas Toby. What a brilliant thought to climb up the bush to sneakily catch a bird! The only thing that set you back was the weight of your body. If you had weighed less, you could have sneaked up on those unsuspecting birds, and had a feast! Might I suggest holding on to some balloons whilst you climb the bush next time? You could tie one to your tail fur good measure. Good luck next time Toby!
We've never had much luck with birds, but then our Mom never lets us be in an area where we have enough cover to effectively stalk them. So we just run after them willy-nilly, and they always fly away before we get to them. It's a lot of fun though, especially chasing pigeons.
BTW, Concats on being a DDP today!
I caught one years ago. Apparently his family was friends with my Mom. She got all upset and said it's Finch and I shouldn't hunt them because they sing nice. I am allowed to catch sparrows because they can't sing but I didn't catch one yet. Good idea with the bush. Need to implement that on my next hunt.
