My Treat Almost Killed Me

March 29th 2008 7:02 am

A bit of a serious diary entry this morning for me. I was having my usual treat before breakfast this morning. I love these salmon treats in the round plastic container from Petsmart. They are kind of a weird texture- not unlike styrofoam or something. The pieces are in chunks and my mom usually break them apart for me. I was trying to bite off a piece as my mom held it for me. Sometimes the pieces do not break off well due to the dried fish pieces. So I just grabbed the whole piece from her. I knew it didn't go down right and started to paw at my mouth. I didn't know what else to do because I never felt anything in my mouth like this before! I pawed harder and harder and even used both paws in rapid order. My mom thought the piece of food was probably stuck to the roof of my mouth. So she opened my mouth and stuck her finger in but didn't find any food. I was still pawing really fast at my mouth. I was not making any sounds like choking or anything. My mom got me up as she realized it must be stuck in my throat! She pulled me back toward her with a quick jolt to my chest area. Then she was opening my mouth again to try and see if she could get hold of the food. Somehow in all the frenzy it came out and was laying on the floor. And I felt so much better! I started rubbing on my mom's back a whole bunch as I was really happy that I felt better. She then offered me a small piece of the treat and I nibbled at it but didn't really want it. That is very unlike me as I love this stuff. But I didn't love it at the moment. I later ate my breakfast just fine. So I guess my mom just may have saved me by doing a cat-type Heimlich Maneuver. This really shows just how fast things can go wrong and we could be crossing the Rainbow Bridge. Whew- I really need a nap now.

Love,
Louis
