After seeing a picture of Silvio online, in the Miami-Dade shelter as of 1/19/11 and up for euthanization, we decided to adopt him (we had him pulled and left the next day at 6am). He was listed as a 5-week old stray with no medical record. Upon receiving him, we rushed him to a veterinary hospital in Boca Raton, only 40 minutes away because we knew he would not make the 5-hour ride back to Gainesville to our vet. He stayed under emergency care with full consent to proceed with anything needed and he was even transferred to another facility for overnight care. We had received him filthy, infested with fleas and covered with flea dirt (flea feces and eggs), he had internal parasites, a respiratory infection, his behind was so covered in dried excrement that he was unable to relieve himself until after the vet was able to clean him, he had a badly swollen eye and both eyes were oozing. He had been gasping for air and was malnourished, with the vet's estimation of his age at only 3-4 weeks. He had been in the shelter form 1/19/11 until 1/28/11- nine days without someone cleaning him up, properly feeding him or even noticing that he was barely clinging to life. After 3 agonizing days waiting for this precious little angel to pull through, his little body just couldn't make it. Silvio passed away on Sunday, January 30, 2011.
Our only comfort was that he was clean comfortable, warm and surrounded by a family who still loves him and will never forget him.
We miss him so much. He was the tiniest, most beautiful little angel. We opened a petition in his name to tell Miami-Dade to improve their shelters:
