Gumpy's passing feels like a signal somehow to accept what we know must be true - the kittens are gone. The Mama is very heartsick about it. They were here for breakfast on Monday morning, but after that, no sign. That means they've been gone for 5 feedings. That they might miss one or two feedings is understandable; they were still nursing, after all, so the food they got from us was extra. But not to show for this long - that can't be good. We just can't imagine how something could have taken out all of them at once; and then not to be able to find any evidence of it anywhere - the Mama went looking, though she was afraid to. But there is the Little Mama coming to dinner, and no kittens with her. So sorry to have to bring this news.
That is sad news. I don't think the little momma would have left them anywhere else while they were nursing. When I lived outside, I nursed till I had teeth! I feel sorry for those babies. Please let us know if there is any good news.
That is sad. Please let us know if your et any news of them.
We're so sorry about the kittens. Sending hugs to the Mama. Purrs that maybe, maybe they can still be found.
Oh, so sad. We send our purrs. Is there anyone else near you that may be feeding them? Or would have taken them?
Sad mews. It's really been terribly sad comin' here to Catster lately...Gumpy our dear furiend 'n now Colleen too, travelin' to da bridge. Sorry 'bout da kittens, maybe little Mama took 'em somewhere her thought wuz safe? Purrs to ur mommy 'n hope dey can be found.
Hope them coyotes dint get 'em : ( Hope the Mama cat is ok and she had them hidden like MILO said.
When we lived in the country the coyotes would howl at night and we knew they got something when they wud start "YIPPIN'". They even got so bold as to come up to our yard!
I wusn't born'ded at that time but MC tells me stories 'bout it and says that Yippin' wus spookie! ((O_O))
Also had beeg owls and they got baby animals too... it is the way of nature but it skeers me *turns light on and looks under couch*
Thank you all for the kind thoughts and words. It looks like now what probably happened is an unneutered male that the Mama thought she saw last night or the night before, killed them. This new cat is another black, so it's really hard to tell, but she's pretty sure she hadn't seen it before. We don't believe it was the coyotes, as they seem to have moved on again. Plus we didn't hear any yipping that night that we first missed seeing the kits at dinner, which we would have thought we would if the coyotes were that close. She can't help going to the window over and over again, though, hoping to see one survivor at least who has come out of hiding. If one shows up now, she says she will bring it inside, whether we inside cats like it or not. Oh, and Little Mama has continued to come to feed without interruption, and is unharmed. And as far as we can tell, all others of the colony are accounted for.
We are so so sorry. The poor babies. Sorry we weren't around when you needed us.
That happened with my pet harlequin and calico mice. Turns out the third mouse Mom got was a pregnant and killed three of Spinner's mice before Mom even realized she was missing some babies.
The third mouse never even got named cause Mom was so mad at her. Oh yeah, and she was exiled into her own tank and tried killing her own babies! Mom took the babies from the mad mouse and gave them to Spinner to raise...guess what Spinner and Pierre (the Daddy mouse) raised them with pleasure!
