Zoes secret dreams made public

why can't it be done with love

Mom was sent a petition today about a Skechers commercial featuring greyhound racing. At first mom being business minded and schooled in Advertising Mom just couldn't see the problem. To her the connection made great sense and was a perfect parallel. But then she started reading and realized, it wasn't about just promoting dog racing it was about the horrors of dog racing itself. Mom thought they had quit killing the dogs, for some reason she thought they were being watched and fined by animal groups and the government. She really has missed the boat on this one. Mom said she loves watching Greyhounds race, just like she loves watching the Derby or Dogs running agility courses. It's such a delight watching the little terriers race, or frogs try to out hop each other.

So I asked Mom, why can't it be done with love? Like with the majority of the horses or the dogs running agility courses? Why does greed have to hurt everything with a heart?

Mom says attacking an ad scheduled to air during the super bowl that there isn't even real proof that they are using the footage taken at THE dog park in question is a little extreme. That's the glass half empty side of Mom showing. And Mom has never been big on boycotting. Mom believes boycotting should be used only when a company has knowingly done something wrong. IE: Tyson, Walmart, anybody that supports Micheal Vick. Mom is also very, very sensitive to companies such as Budweiser being sold to foreign companies out of greed. Did you know the share holders sold Budweiser without the family agreeing to the sale? It was basically ripped out of their hands. A great great grandson tried commenting suicide right after the sale because of the overwhelming feeling of stress and failure. Sad and for what Money you can't take with you!!!! Where's the American Pride? We once was the Industrial mecca and now we are nothing because of Greed and High Taxes.

Mom get off your soap pedestal! Back to dog racing!

Mom says our best action is to go against the Dog Racing Park owners and gamblers themselves. She sees nothing wrong with running a Greyhound but she sees everything wrong with how these dogs live..they might as well be in a puppy mill. They feed them D grade meat! As in diseased, downed, dead livestock meat! And they should have happy homes and be loved as a pet and ran as sport on a limited amount.

Mom isn't saying by the way that all horse racing is good. Some owners treat their horses like a meal ticket but if anyone has ever drove through Kentucky you would see that the horses are very much loved.

So, how do we go about trying to stop this? How do we go about independent owners running their dogs in pride like with the horses? How do we do this with love? Any suggestions?

PS- If you wish to sign the petition or read the documents about dog racing that accompanies the petition Look up and search for Super Bowl Ad promoting dog fighting.

What do we do though? Do we petition the government to raise the fines on the Dog Parks?

I believe if you could make Greyhound racing more recreational the dogs wouldn't suffer but how do we get there?

Just looking at Gris.. he's getting so tall. As tall as I am now.

Stricter regulation seems to be the only way. Mom has friends who are members and owners of greyhounds of Greyhound Friends rescue. Maybe, they are doing something already. Bad thing is a lot of Greyhound rescue groups don't want to see the dogs raced at all. I understand if they were rescued and tried but that's like telling a horse not to run ever again. I'll see what's out there.

Mom used to be in St. Louis and was very involved with Anheuser Busch for years. They were a proud tradition there and were very involved when she was doing flood relief with the Red Cross. We were very sad to hear of the sale - the company was always run by someone in the Busch family. She knew Gussie Busch(RIP), August the III and IV. Great men. It's a ahame.
From mom:
I can't understand how someone can run dogs and not fall in love with them and treat them better than themselves. I guess because I can fall for any animal I see and would give my own food if they needed it. Everybuddy we've met here is the same way - we'd make sacrifices for our animals.
Right now my concern is that rentals here are all starting to say "No Pets". It's hard to find a rental unit that allows pets and I think it is probably a trend everywhere.
Of course, we are lucky. The apartments we live in don't normally allow pets, but they used to so they have made an exception for the ones here and the apartment manager has a kitty(Boo) and LOVES them; LOVES Tink & Snow here, and Sammy & Delilah next door. We have a couple of small dogs who visit, but dogs aren't allowed to stay.
Where are people going to go? If there's no pets, are they going to have to give theirs up? This prevents them from adopting. Are the shelters going to suffer? I'm afraid so.
I believe everyone with pets should go see the places with "No Pets" and try to convince them to make an exception. I'm sure they will have to pay more. We didn't only because Tink came about a year after I got here. Tink just showed up and of course they knew because she was in the window all the time. We've been here for awhile, 4 and a half years, so they trust me. Our town just instituted laws for rental inspections, but we will pass easily here. It's a great place to live, even though the rent is going up each year, like everywhere.
I'm just worried that it's going to back up the shelters even more and now they are "No Kill" so they haven't taken new ones in for about a year now. All the kitties outdoors have to stay out there and become feral communities, and hope for someone to care for them.
Enough. Sorry for the rant. Thanks for the info; we'll check it out! Luv, Barbara & Tink

Mom went her rant and so can you. I think it's good to say whats on your heart. And what a better place for discussion just like this.

Being in the Carpet cleaning and Renovation business I can tell you a deposit will not cover the price of replacing soiled carpets and the padding underneath and that's probably the number one reason why everybody is going to a no pet policy. But if an apartment complex would go out on the limb and embrace the "we love our pets" concept it would benefit them in one way or another. Maybe, they could offer advise on pet soiling issues to keep the price down.

And trust me with Zoe's unusual bathroom habits I have learned how to keep her in the box as much as I can. She still uses our guest bathtub occasionally but I have broke her of peeing on the vent in the bathroom and on the floors. I think, I hope. The pet deterrent with citrus scent really helps a lot.

Clark Howard, one of my financial heros, suggest for rental owners to add a clause stating that the first 30 percent (I think it was 30) of all service calls to the rental house would be paid by the renter. He says this cuts back on a lot of problems because it puts more responsibility on the renter. Maybe, apt. complexes should do the same. Have yearly inspections for parents and pet owners and charge an outrageous price for major not basic carpet cleaning or carpet piecing. Another words let pets live in their apts but make their parents more responsible...cause I guarantee it's a few rotten eggs that has ruined it for everyone. Plus, some people would rather get something fixed out of their own pockets than have the Apt. Complex know about it. IE: Keeping cost down.

As far as the shelters go, I know I worry about that too. I thank the only thing we can do is give. It doesn't have to be money, it can be food, or beds. The Guildford County shelter here is our best shelter around, and they do the best they can with the space they have and the charity they receive. I sponsoring animals myself. Joe, My beloved baby, was sponsored and one day from being euthanized when I got him. Was the fact that he was cheap effected me picking him no but to some people maybe. Was him being euthanized a reason for me getting him no, again. I feel in love with him but these things only made bringing him home even sweeter. We called him our death row kitty. I guess he was pardoned by me and David. LOL.

It is so very sad the cruelty that these animals endure and there is no need at all! I agree, I love watching the agility and dog trials. I have never watched a greyhound race before. It is a sad statement but "greed" unfortunately rules and those that "have" want to ensure that those who "have not" remain as have nots. With all of the wealth and natural resources of North America, there is no need for the poverty that exists. If people actually took the time and effort to care about their neighbor and give a helping hand, I believe we would all be better off and the division that exists would slowly be eliminated. From a truly economic and business perspective, is this possible??

Ok, this isn't Harley, Mom hijacked the computer from me.

Thanks for the info we are gonna go check it out too wow mom loves to watch the dogs race but thought they were put into loving homes after they "retired" we even know some humans that adopted one.
Thanks for saving Joe, you know I was a death row kitty too, mom and dad were talking about my rescue just yesterday, mom broke me out of there the day they were going to do that awful deed.
Tink that is very sad to hear so glad you and snow are okay in your rental, pets add so much more enjoyment to life and we really do love so unconditionally.

It's so sad to hear about the way these dogs are treated - I don't understand how people can do that.

Yeah, to death row kitties who are saved!

I guess some of the Dog Parks do give the dogs away when they retire. But one the particular park they are talking about has a history of killing them. I'm like you Boo, I thought the dogs were watched after better than this. We have a friend with a doggie from Greyhound friends too and also my human auntie and her son volunteer at their adoption fairs. Mom at one time thought about fostering one of them before Diamond came along.

Jez...people surprise Mom everyday with the way they treat others and animals. I'm like the Tabbies, we need a new word for humanity.

Wez so sad that some peeplz would just see the $$ in lives of animals. What yews sayin' 'bout the greyhounds is true for horses, too. If a racehorse don't do as well on the track as they want they just put 'em down. Or most often, young horses are being run before their bodies is done growing and 'dey breakdown, often right on the track. We was at Keeneland when that happened earlier 'dis year. Stephanie sees it all the time. We rescued a racehorse earlier this year. He has become such a pawsome and sweet guy (for a thoroughbred!). Sad thing is horses are to expensive to keep, its hard to find adoptions for them.

We kn ew if anybody knew the sad truths of horse racing it would be you guys. See I didn't realize it was that bad. Why can't they what till the babies are fully developed, imagine how many good runners they have wasted by being inpatient. How disappointing, I always thought things were different in KY.

If our land wasn't hilly, we would come get one or two from you. But Mom only has 5 acres and it is just not good horse land. Right across the dirt road is a gorgeous pasture that would be great for that but Mom doesn't own it.

When my mommy was a little girl they had a rescued racing greyhound named Donnie. She was so scared of everything, she didn't even like going outside or walking on slippery floors. We don't know what happened to her, but she was in rough shape. Poor girl. Mommy hates dog racing because of what happens behind the scenes, it's awful. Thank catness it is now outlawed in most states.
