Mom needing advice

As some of you know Mom has a dog out at Grandma and Grandpas named Tux. He is 17 years old. For all of you with experience with older animals, your knowledge could be very helpful. Diamond is going to post the same diary to try to get help on Dogster to and Tux is part of a group for old farts, so Mom will be going there too.

It's very simple Tux still does his job, running out to the truck to greet Grandpa when he comes home. He still gets excited to see Mom and Dad when they come over. They just don't think he's ready to go for his long walk.

Simply put, he's not hungry. He's turning away from his food. He's gotten so picky in his old age, and Mom tried getting Grandma and Grandpa to give him some meds to help with his tummy. But they just haven't done it. Honestly, Mom thinks Grandma thought the suggestion was silly. Grandpa said he was going to keep an eye on Tux this weekend to make sure he's pooping alright, he also bought some livers to give Tux to eat last night and he said he did eat.

How do I help Tux eat better more than every two days
and how do we get Grandma to understand that he needs an little extra help

Mees says that daddy says if this just started, go to vet, quick!!! Hees may have an intestinal problem, or a stomach problem! Not eating is not normal for dogs!!

Blizzard, Tux is 17. so, this is kinda normal for animals his age. I'm sorry I should have mentioned that before. A matter of fact I'm going to add that to the diary right now.

Hi Zoe, Tux and I have a few things in common ~ I'm a tuxie and I'm almost 17! Well, Mom hasn't had a doggie for a while, so she doesn't have a lot of ideas. Though when kitties are not wanting to eat for a period of time, there is sometimes (or often) something else going on. When was the last time he saw the vet? Hmmm? Maybe try some different foods? Us cats and dogs gotta eat. We'll be purring for Tux and hope he starts eating soon!

Blizzard & Gumpy are right about a vet visit~ our doggie goes to the vet every six months cause she is a senior and we are trying to catch things before they go wrong, so maybe a vet visit is in order if he hasn't been already. And tasty foods are always tempting... DaTabbies is right too~ a tooth can really affect one's appetite. Your vet is gonna play a big role in letting you know what is going on. We are sending purrs to Tux.

My Mom agrees...maybe the teeth or even his sense of smell. Kinda like when you have a cold and nothing tastes good..How are his bowels? Could there be some constipation?

Tasha maybe your dog should know our dogs.

Like Mom said he ate Friday night but barely grazed today, he even turned down bacon at breakfast. Who does that!

Here's Mom-
I don't think he's seen Doc sense last fall. He had a routine checkup and a blood panel done. Everything was fine except for the fact that he's 17. He's an old man with old man problems. I am going to Petsmart tomorrow to buy some of the foods that are high quality yummy foods, and start him on pepsid or something like. I have to find out which one to give dogs.

If not better then, he's going to see Doc.

You know as we get older there are certain foods that we have to avoid so I just wonder could the food Mom and Dad have him on is hurting his stomach. Does he have to much acid in his stomach now? He is on a senior food but which one Mom and Dad are giving him now I don't know. They have to change it up to get him to eat. I really don't think it's sickness cause he always eats with Diamond when he is here. But that could just be a social thing too.

I will keep you guys updated.

Skylar, Grandpa watched him go to the bathroom today. It's an off and on thing. But lately it's gotten worse. Mom says for them to have told her it must be bad cause they try to save her from worrying about him plus Mom gets on to them for giving him table scraps all the time. He's supposed to be on a heart healthy diet.

oh yea we are purring for tux too. I am not sure the age thing is behind his not eating as much. Mom thought her skids kitty's weight loss was just and age thing when she finally took her in, the vet said to never assume any change in normal behavior is related to age, sometimes it is but most of the time it is somthing ele. Be careful about giving him upset tummy meds, because if that is not the problem and yet you treat for it, could it make his tmmy more upset???IDK but in hmans the dr told grandma that taking that stuff if you dont really need it casues your body to produce even more acid. Oh yea grandma dog was over 15 when she went to the bridge with liver problems but she ate all the way up until the last two or three days before she had to go to the bridge.
Please do keep us updated we are furry concerned for Tux.

This is Mom:
Thank You Tigger.

He came over today and did not eat with Diamond, I will be checking in on him later to see if he ate dinner at home. Two doggie friends reminded me that pumpkin is good for the tummy.

I've about came to the conclusion that I will take him in. I just hope that it is just another symptom of his age and not something worse. He's so old he wouldn't make it throw anything major.

Please keep praying, cause we know one day we will have to let him go but it will hurt us so deeply.

UPDATE ON TUX!!! Mom got Tux some Beneful complete meals with roasted chicken and veggies and he ate the heck out of it. Mom left two more meals there. She said she would pick up more if he keeps eating them good. Grandpa did agree that he needs something that won't aggravate his stomach anymore.

Mom looked at his teeth and gums they looked fine but again, if this only last a few days Mom will be taking him to the vets.

But, for the time being Mom considers this a good thing.
