While we were commenting on Chief Roosters diary tonight Mom started to questioning Blackies' death again. I'm going to let Mom take over to tell you the story of Blackie.
I'm going to tell you this as short and simple as I know how. I do not want to take away from little Vern's death in any way so please don't take this like that. It's just got my wheels in the old brain a turning, wondering what killed Blackie.
First Blackie was fine and then he wasn't. I took him to the Vet and Tonya said he had a blocked bile duct. That wasn't it. I tried taking him back but the bean counters in the front wouldn't let me see the Doc because I couldn't pay for the visit. I told them he's not getting better and that I had just payed my house payment so I was broke. But they were owned by a big corp. and they just would tell me no. Anyway, that's another sore spot, but not why I'm telling you this.
Finally, I got a hold of Tonya, and told her the bean counters won't let me see her. She said bring him and told me to ignore them. By this point it had been a few days. They kept him over night. Tonya told me, she had misdiagnosed him and that she was very sorry. The main Doc. came in and said it could be serious, we have sent some lab work off. That he wanted Blackie to stay there so they can watch him till they get the results back. Which would be in 5 days because of it being the Thur. before Labor Day weekend. Bad timing.
Doc called me Sunday evening suggesting that I put him down. I was so young and stupid then, I actually thought Doc might be wrong again. So, I said "no, lets fight it." I remember hearing the disappointment in Doc's voice. So stupid of me. Blackie died Tues. morning in a cold cage at the Vets after suffering. This will always haunt me.
Okay, when Doc told me the results as I was holding my dead precious cat in my arms, everything he said was muffled. Honestly, I didn't hear a thing he said except he had said earlier this virus will take down a horse, and getting it from birds. He also said there was a vaccine but it was ineffective, so they don't give it. I always meant to go back and get his file or at least write down the virus that killed him but I never did. Does this sound like a virus that any of you know of? Please help me. I don't know if it will make me feel better but at least I would know what killed him.
P.S.-That's when I started going to the Vet we go to know. Not because of Tonyas mistake but because of the bean counters turning a deathly sick animal away. And taking advantage of the fact that I'm not the type to make a scene. Which is exactly what I should have done. That Vet is gone now by the way. The main Doc opened his own Vet, privately owned right behind it.
Again, I'm not wanting to take away from the precious Verns trip to the bridge.
Oh urrrg! Catster will not let me post, I got that crazy error #3 again. I sent you a pawmail.
I don't know much about FIP but it sounds as though your Blackie may have had that too, and what caused his demise. From what I've read--it's a wicked/fatal disease.
I forgot to say in my pawmail how I am so sorry you had to go through that we always want to fight it and give them a chance. I wish I had not made alley go thru the awful last days of vets visits (so stressful) exrays and pokes needles and strangers, but it is tooo hard to just give up.
Sometimes even our best intentions can turn out badly. Don't blame yourself. You did the best you could at the time and Blackie knows how much you loved him.
Purrs & comforting huggies...
Thank You guys for the support, Verns' case just brought up some old feelings and questions.
I remember he lost a lot of weight so fast. How can your baby be good one day, running and jumping and two days latter he can't take 5 steps without falling to the ground.
Just to sad to talk about even know, almost 10 years latter.
oh I tried to comment to and catster won't let me :( "error #3" keeps coming up, we sent a pawmail.
Mom said that for a couple days Dogster was doing that error#3 thing to her and she agrees it is very aggravating but it did clear up.
Hello Zoe, best intentions sometimes aren't enough, but you can't blame yourselves for it. I know this first hand. Foster mommy had to send me to a different foster home last summer. Daddy had a business trip to India, Simone was having stress attacks, and mommy had to go to Paris to study real soon. They had to send me to a different foster home. They thought it was in my best interest as well as theirs. The family I ended up with didn't pay close enough attention to me, I stopped eating and because I was overweight from years of neglect, I became very sick and had to cross over the bridge. When foster mommy found out she sobbed for what felt like days. How could she let me go to a different home like that and let me die? I tried to let her know it wasn't her fault, you can't blame yourselves. We all do our best for one another on Earth, sometimes things are beyond our control. I know you Zoe, but just so your mommy is reminded again, We kitties love you parents very much. We know you do your best for us, remember, we know what's best. Sometimes our time is meant to be very short. It isn't because you failed or we didn't love you, it's just the way things have to be sometimes. We always know when someone truly loves us though, and we love you back for that devotion.
I'm sorry about the loss of your beloved Blackie, so terrible. I really don't know anything about a virus, maybe somebody else will be able to help you.
Mom is so thankful for all of your kind words. We truly appreciate it.
I'm so sorry to hear about the experience you had with Blackie. Don't feel bad about the decision you made. You made the best decision you could make at the time.
That is sad about Blackie. Don't feel bad - you made the best decision you could.
Mom no longer thanks it was FIP cause Doc told her that the virus comes from Birds. In one of our pmails we got said FIP is in the cat itself and it seems to hit you baby's. Blackie was 4 or 5 when he died but still way to early. Mom will be trying to figure out what virus it was.
Thank You everybody.
Concats on being DDP today, we hope you have a great day.
I'm so sorry about your sweet Blackie, what a sad 'n tragic story! We feel your pain. I was actually 5, almost 6 when my Doc diagnosed me with FIP. Yes I had lost half my body weight, nothing was good with me. Doc said it can lay dorment for many years before it just starts attacking all the vital organs and they shut down. Some kitties live with it for years. I wasn' so lucky. Mom didn't have a choice. There was no reversal. If this virus came from birds, I sure hope you find out what it is..sounds like the severe viral flu's that hoomans get? Again our heart goes out to you, 'n your furmily.
Concats on your DDP honor! We love you!!!
Smokey Joe, Milo 'n furmily
We hope Blackie is happy and free at the Rainbow Bridge.
Concats on being a DDP today Zoe.
Little Bit & the SF Gals
You know mom read that too sometimes FIP is dormant for many years even though most of the time it affects kitties that are less than 24 mths old, it sometimes shows up later stress or another illness can get it started if it is already dormant in the cat. This this link leads to petes story. We find it when we first came here, I don't think they are on catster any more but the older forum post talks FIP in the olde kitty. Hope your mom can get closure knowing there was nothing else you could have done differnt. Here is pet's page his dad wrote a tribute links from his page.
fip in older cats
oh yes we forgot a big congratulationis! on you DDP today! have a great day BFF
What would I do without you and your Mom, and oh ya, you siblings. Diamond just put that slash in their with her ball. Cute huh, talking about siblings and mine defaces my post. She's cute so I won't kill her. Anyway, we love you guys deeply and Thank You for helping.
CONCATS Zoe! on your honor today!!!!we hope you have a great day!!
Now for your question, all we know is we cannot blame ourselves for what we decided to do or not do....Mom did everything possible for me when I had cancer knowing that I would not make it, in the end she had to let me go...
Mom says that you changing Vet was good and you need to make a fuss when it is life and death....and you learn from what you go through, so now you know you have to be pushy and make a fuss if need be...Mom has learned from every pet she has lost and had some kind of illness...we are only human and our kitties know much we are loved....you did the best you could have done at the time...
We are purring for your Moms peace and comfort now...
Send you our love and lots of hugs
ConCats on DDP!!!
Congrats on your DDP!
Mom read that bird flu can be spread to cats, but I think that's very rare, and I'm not sure there were any recorded cases of it in the U.S.
Awww thanks my BFF diamond is so funny we never had puppy siblings and our cousin little bit was already old when we met her. Wow mom just read alley's post and she thinks we need a tpist MOL, she was typing really quick from work. Hope you had a wonderful day.
