I work in the wonderful land of the cubicle. Of course I have Alley Cat Ally notices up as I support as many TNR's as I can manage. So, anyhow, in October 08 a contractor working on the building comes up and starts talking about the poster, and, if I know any local shelters. I gave him a few names an numbers and he thanked me and went back to work. The back story is that this is his son's cat and he himself has multiple large dog's. He comes by again in November and says the shelters he called are all full. I suggest the son using his friends for networking to find a new home. Off he goes. First week in December he is by again with the story that the son's friend will be taking "Buddy". Next week the story is that the friend left town without Buddy. He does not want to take him to the kill shelter and I agree. I say that I will foster and start asking health questions: FIV?, last vet visit? How old? Any special needs. So we agree that he will bring Buddy by and I give him my cel number and, no call. I figure Buddy got a home. Wrong guess. Christmas week he calls and says again no home for Buddy and he will call asap with a plan to deliver him. I get the call on December 30. He can come by New Years eve day. Calls again on New Years eve. So Buddy was my New Years Date as I got him in the Dunkin D parking lot at 9:30PM 12/31. I just canceled my plans as I did not want to just drop him at home and run. So my new years date became part of the household
Bio:
I was really surprised the first time I saw Buddy out of his carrier(oof he was a load). He was so big and such a fine coat. I kept him in the bath room for the night. I sat in there for an hour and then poked in every so often. In a day the boyz stopped fussing due to the door being closed. I then left the door open and he promptly moved in. Only problem was he moved in under my big antique desk which is in a corner and did not come out.
So this is the rest of Big Buddy's move in story.
So he goes under my desk. I figure that is a good a spot as any to get used to us. I noticed that more food was going. I added another litter box. And I waited. And waited. And waited. I would hear him at night but never see him.(The desk has walls on 3 sides).
I finally figured we needed a bit of proactive intervention. I got him out of behind the desk with great effort. I put him back in the bathroom on a Friday night. I visited him hourly over the weekend. On Monday I left the bathroom door open again and figured I would come home to Buddy out and about. No. Buddy now moved into the linen closet in the bathroom. Second shelf up. Back behind the paper towels. He had knocked all the towels down in his climb so I re-arranged things. So there we were. I worked on giving him attention. He would try and nip. He was not a happy camper. Whenever I would reach in he would press back as far as he could. I wore him down. He finally allowed me to give him a pat on the head.
I started calling him "The Isolationist" and "The Recluse". Of course I had to explain this to visiting friends who were in need of the facilities. "Watch out for the cat in the closet!", "What cat?", "The Cat in the closet. Don't pet him. He may bite!" They would come out wondering "Why is the cat in the closet?". It became a standard question "How is the Recluse?" "Fine."
Well, Buddy did finally move out of the bathroom. Back under the desk of course. He would, at times, move back on the self for a day or two. I had arranged a nice towel and some paper towel rolls to make a nice cubby for him. I kind of missed him as I would stop in and visit his little condo whenever I was going by.
So over about a year he did come out during the day. I would see him walk by while I was sitting on the couch. He would stop and give me a stare. He started watching Toby and Tim play. Toby started chasing him so I had to intervene. A lot of Toby intervention.That Toby. He started playing with Tim a few minutes at a time.
Then came the night he came onto the bed. I sleep very poorly and had just re-arranged myself when I felt the bed move. Not Tim he was in his spot. Not Toby he was in his spot. I just laid there. He jumped down in a few minutes. Then he started coming every night. He started coming when I was reading. He had his own spot.
After that he really started being comfortable. It had maybe a full year. He moved off the bed at night but staked out a couch spot. He got into the treat queue. He started stealing coffee creamer and was making a mess so I would give him a tiny bit in the morning with my coffee. He started having pet time with me when I would have my first cup.
He has turned into such a wonderful cat it is like a miracle. The biting angry loner now sits next to me as I read. Gives me the head bump for pets. He plays with both Toby but mostly plays with Tim.
He still steals food whenever he can but he is on a wet food diet which has made him even more outgoing.
Buddy is a great cat! A cat with an interesting personality that really adds to our family. He is perplexing at times. He is very needy at times. He is a thief in the night. He is a fine example that even older cats can be socialized to new homes. It only took a lot of time and love.
Cats are such interesting creatures. Wonders of nature. Always a step away from the wild. That they choose to live with us and teach us is a blessing.
