Arrival Story: The wonderful group of people who were fostering Tia notified me about Charley and when I met him, I had to adopt him too. He and Tia met the day I adopted them and were perfect lady and gentleman cats. No hissing or fussing. Charley let me pick him up and sat in my lap and purred for a while but there were too many toys around for that to last long. He introduced himself to my mother who was in her wheelchair; stood up beside her and loved on her hand when she held it out. He's very mischevious and up to something except when he's asleep in my lap. I'm sure I'll add more as we get better acquainted.

Bio: November 29, 2010: Charley has calmed down some and isn't so rough with Tia. He's learned what "OUCH!", "NO TEETH" and "No Claws" means although I rarely have to use any of them. When he plays with me he's careful to use his paws and not his claws and he licks rather than bites. He's still into everything and still loves to get into boxes and on cold mornings, he likes to come under the cover and snuggle with my feet.
August 31, 2010: Charley reminds me so much of Steinem. He's into everything and has to see what's going on. Sticks his nose everywhere. He love to play in boxes; his best trick is getting into a plastic shoe box (his head and his tail stick out). He has grown so much; he doesn't look like a kitten now. I watched him come down the hall the other day; he's got such a strut. He knows he is a handsome cat. I've had to stop calling him baby boy; he's my little man now. Yesterday I bought him his own glass; he's always trying to drink out of my glass or cup. It's in the sink right now so I can put him some water in it later. He and Tia are so cute together but they can have some huge spats. I worried that he would hurt her until I saw her hide from him and then knock him over when passed. He grooms her or walks up to her and drops his head so she can lick the top of his head and his ears.
We don't know much about Charley's early life. He was found as a stray; we don't know how old he is. He was used to humans and has excellent manners. He's OK with dogs and other cats. We'd been home about an hour when he hopped into my lap for a nap. I'm using April 13, 2009, as his birthday since he was about one year old when I got him on April 13, 2010. He's named for a severely disabled man I worked with for several years. Charlie was a loving person and had a great deal of intelligence for someone so developmentally handicapped. He had the most gorgeous blue eyes. That's where I got the name. When I looked at my Charley, the first thing I thought was "His eyes are the color of Charlie's." The spelling of the Bleau part is the way his foster mom named him when he was with her.

Mom has been very quiet and sad for the last week or so. Yesterday, she told us why.
Uncle's cancer has begun to spread again and the doctor doesn't hold out much hope. In fact the doctor said that he was surprised that Uncle had lasted this long, based on Uncle's condition last January. They are going to take things one day at a time and the family is going to spend as much time together as they can.
Auntie says that when the time comes, they will have Hospice come to the house rather than going to a Hospice House. Mom says that we might move into Uncle's camper so she can be close and help out with whatever has to be done.
We probably won't be here a lot for the near future but we'll try to check in.
This is Mom . . . On top of everything else, I just got a message that our emails are bouncing. This is the third or fourth time this has happened in the last few weeks and this is the only site we have a problem with. I check my emails every day.
I've written Headquarters asking what is going on. Hopefully, they'll be able to straighten this out. I am too tired and sad to keep setting up new accounts. I may wind up deleting our accounts and setting them up on Facebook so we can keep in touch.

Our next door neighbor's dog was killed in our driveway this afternoon. The neighbor's housemate had let the dogs out of their daytime run for exercise but didn't have them on leashes.
Mom's cousin who's visiting from out of state was turning into the drive and the two dogs darted toward the car; the older one ran right under the wheels. Mom's cousin didn't even know he'd hit anything until he pulled up into the yard.
The neighbor is shattered; she's angry at her housemate because she feels he wasn't being careful enough. Mom's cousin is very upset because he just lost his dog of 16 years this past summer.
The housemate is upset because he was careless. Mom worries that this will come between her and the neighbor; they've become close since Grandmother died.
Mom wants me to remind all pet owners to keep your pets out of harms way. This tragedy could have so easily prevented.
It's going to be cold here tonight (19 degrees F) so I plan to sleep under the covers close to Mom.

Mom hasn't written my "thank yous"a yet but she promises that she will.
Now, most of you know that Mom is not a Christmas as it is celebrated fan. In fact, you could call her a "Bah, humbug" kind of person. That makes spending too much time in malls and stores this time of year particularly difficult for her. The fates consipired to bash her in the head with a feather pillow this past Friday. The story is as follows:
Mom has misplaced her "good" glasses. She almost thinks that one of us (probably me) has hidden said glasses; she hasn't come right out and made an accusation . . . but. On Friday when Mom went to put on her spare pair of glasses, they broke into two pieces in her hands.
Mom is pretty inventive so she rigged up a temporary fix with florist wire and a pair of clip on sunglasses in order to try to get the spare pair repaired. The only eye doctor that was open didn't have a set of frames that would fit the lenses and the lenses are "safety" lenses and cannot be cut down is size.
The wonderful people in the doctor's office sent to her to a local jeweler who managed to solder the frames back together but could give no hope that the repair would hold for very long.
Mom had made an exam appointment for late in the afternoon on Friday and knowing how difficult traffic would be in the state capitol, she left early in order not be be late. Needless to say, she got there early and had to spend time in a very large mall being bombarded by "Ho, ho, ho" on all sides. The people at the Lenscrafters were fantistic. They managed to get Mom's examination done and her glasses made before 7 p.m. Mom finally got home about 9:30 p.m. (the traffic was terrible).
On Saturday morning, Mom got up and loved on us, fed us, checked water, litter boxes, etc. and went to Uncle's house. Since she had planned to wrap presents and go to the grocery store on Friday she hadn't wrapped presents or picked up anything to take for lunch. Mom knows that Auntie always has enough foot to feed an army but still . . .
Mom picked up fresh vegetables and dip on the way. When she got to Uncle's house, she washed and cut up the veggies and put them out on the table. Then she went out to the van and wrapped the presents on the front seat. By the time she got home about 5:30 p.m. on Christmas Eve she was exhausted and not in any shape to check anything.
Today, Mom spent all day with us and we got treats and cuddles and ear scritches and humble apologies for the confusion of the last few days. Hopefully, her New Year's resolution will be to spend more time with us and less time elsewhere.
To everyone who sent me kind words and gifts for my Daily Diary Picks of last week and for Christmas, Mom promises to thank everyone indivudually.
We want to join Tia in wishing that everycat will find a loving home in 2012.
