An Angel's Notes for the Day

My friend Max has a message

I made a new friend yesterday and he needs some purrs. His name is Max and he's in the hospital and not feeling very well. How I met him was through one of threads about feeding kitties spinach. What's kinda funny is that I'd forgotten that spinach is NOT good for kitties until I looked at my own website! Hey, Mom can't remember what she did yesterday, never mind everything we have written on there.

But indeed spinach, although not toxic, is VERY troublesome. Max's mom has given me permission to use her posts and her pawmails because she wants everyone to know what is happening with Max. This was her posts in the thread:

"Don't give spinach--it contains oxalates which can put the cat into renal failure--which i am now battling with my dear cat's life in jeopardy. if i had only known--i always thought it was so funny how much he loved it, i bought it just for him. it wasn't on any of the poison lists and now i find that i may have cut short his life. i pray he lives through this--never another bit of human food for any of them."

This is heartbreaking and she's doing all she can for him. Her pawmails to me read:

"it's just becoming more known that spinach is a problem. it causes oxalate deposition and right now it looks like that is the most likely cause of his problem. he got IV and subcutaneous fluids yesterday evening and it was a rough night--he wouldn't eat, didn't pee, just drooled. I forced a little oral water and at least he didn't vomit. This morning we had to use a needle to get urine from the bladder to test and after that. So, more fluid and tests today and tomorrow I may have to take him to the state vet college for dialysis if he's unimproved."

My answer to that original poster after I looked it up was: "Spinach can cause crystal formation in the urinary tract and should be avoided completely in cats with urinary problems. But on the whole I'd say don't feed kitties any raw veggies! Or any veggies at all frankly. Cats are obligate carnivores and there's no reason for them to eat so many vegetables. They do have it in their foods already so I wouldn't do it. Even cooked veggies can cause gas, diarrhea, digestion problems. Their bodies aren't designed like a humans that need it."

So #1, if you could please go to Max's page and offer some support to his mom. She doesn't have time to do a diary so maybe you could send her a pawmail, or just support her here on this diary because she will be checking in on it once I let her know it's up.

And #2, please realize that so many foods that are good for humans are NOT good for kitties. Dogs are slightly different as they are omnivores. Carnivores do not need greens even though for some strange reason they love them. But that doesn't mean they should have them. Carrots & peas are the leading veggies in a lot of their canned foods because they are safe, highly digestible and they offer enough fiber for what they need.

I don't care how much a kitty begs for something, always know that saying "NO" can save your kitty's life. In the short term and the long run. http://ibdkitties.net/Toxicfoods.html

Oh Alex, we are purring for Max. Poor kitty. Thank you so much for telling us about veggies and especially spinach. I always knew that cats are carnivors and are very different from humans and dogs but I didn't know that spinach can be so dangerous. Mine have never gotten spinach but one of them ate a little leaf of lettuce a while ago. It just makes sense because in the wild they get very little greens, only what's in the stomach of their prey animals.

Sending many purrs and prayers to Max and him Mommy. Please get well.

Hugs,
Mietzi and Timo

Thank you both my love bug friends! As I said, I don't want anyone to think it's toxic but it is just not good for us kitties! EXACTLY Mietzi, what's in the prey's stomach is predigested and therefore has been voided of anything "active" in veggies. The same as with grains that are not good for kitties. If a kitty eats a mouse, the predigested grains in the mouse's body is fine. That's normal. But kitties don't run into the corn field to eat the corn, they go to eat the mice that eat the corn.

His mommy is very nice and oh so concerned for him. We hope and purr he'll be alright.

purring for max too. we hope he will be ok. me and nellie dont really like human food that much except we get little bit of canned human tuna once in awhile. veggies give nellie really horrible poops even when they are found in cat food.

You're welcome Queen T! We're actually writing a really good newsletter right now about that and a few other things that you'll be interested in. There ya go Alexis! Perfect example. And they wonder why so many kitties get chronic diarrhea. I'm sure some of that could be attributed to veggies. I know there's other reasons, but I'm sure that's one of them.

We are purring hard for you, Max!

...no popeye food for us!
He must have had drooling from those oxalate crystals in his mouth, very irritating to the whole digestive tract, if meowmy read correctly somewhere else...all mucous membranes.
Poor Max!
Get well soon!

Well, it seems Mom has written the above comment under my name. Anyway, we just went to your website and there is all kinds of toxic foods that you list. Oh my cat. I used to play with cherry pits. And I just found a Walnut, it was under the stove. I like to roll it around but Mom is going to look for something safer for me to play with. I know, as long as I don't eat the Walnut I'm fine. But what if I break the shell by accident and start nibbling away? Wow, we have to know this stuff. Thanks Alex for all your research.

Purrs, purrs, purrs for Max and Mom said a prayer

It's been awhile sense we've told you Thank You for your website and newsletters. Your help has saved many I'm sure. You are a true angel.

We are purring for Max, it's so sad to see any kits life being cut short. We hope that he makes it through this.

Mom said she's going to print out the list of bad foods, now if we could find one for doggies. Dad is always asking Mom can Diamond have a bite of this or can Zoe have a bite of that.

Mom says no more tomatoes for me. (I love the tomatoes and lettuce off of her tacos)

If you go to the ASPCA website Zach, they should have a list there. Google toxic foods for dogs and there should be a link that comes up for ASPCA.

Thank you sweetie! I appreciate it. Oh tomatoes aren't good for you baby. Especially not raw ones.

Just heard from Max's mom. Not good. This is what she said: he's still only just stable--the numbers are only slightly better and they are so very bad that the little improvement almost doesn't matter. still, i am keeping hope. thanks for asking after him.

We need a miracle.
