Elderly woman & her 17 cats in path of hurricane (a friend- of ours), need suggestions

Hi everyone, don't want to panic you. I just need to know if anyone lives anywhere near Tom Rivers NJ. This is right in the path of Irene and a friend of mine is in her late 70's almost 80 and she lives alone with her 17 cats. She is not a hoarder she takes excellent care of them. She's alone and I was wondering if anyone lives close to there so they could check on her at all before or after the storm to make sure they are all okay. She's got plenty of food, batteries, emergency stuff. Even rented a large van to put all the carriers in case she needs to get out. BUT she has nowhere to go if she needs to and won't leave her kitties. Please let me know if you have any suggestions or know anyone near there. Thank you!

Mom's sister lives about an hour north of her, but she will be out of town. Maybe the best thing would be to notify the Red Cross or the Southern Baptist Disaster Relief and give them her name. SOmeone will be sent out there to check on her.

I would suggest Mom's sister's family, her husband would help, but they are even closer to the line of fire, would not want to send her that direction. They expect to be evacuated tomorrow.

No we understand, I didn't think of that. That's a great idea about the church or Red Cross. She won't leave her kitties though. that's the only thing. I wonder if they'd be able to get her to a safe place with the animals.

Miranda Nuk just gave us the info for the Red Cross there and a phone number and everything. Why didn't I think of that? MOL

Thank you Jezzy! She was in WWII and started rescuing cats back then. She loves them more than her own life. She's got a bad heart and high blood pressure. I'm very concerned for her.

Mom sent an e-mail to one of her friends with a fairly large network of people, and to a business associate who may live fairly close. We're still waiting to hear back.

Headbonks...

MOL, we all are up aren't we!! Well mom was just looking on the web to see if Walmart or Target sold battery operated lanterns and can't find anything at either store which is DUMB. She was just there today but didn't think to look. Then as she was looking Colette's mommy emailed us and told us about Monida, so we headed over there and now we're worried about her. And little Moppie too. Sigh. I am still worrying about my friend in NJ. Nothing I can do, I gave her all the emergency numbers Nuk gave and she's got them, she told me. She's trying to get as much ready as she can. I keep seeing on the news that her area is being evacuated but she's not going anywhere.

I have a freind in New Jersey and she is having a tough time finding a hotel to house their family and pets. If I was that lady if she lives near the water i wold get all the cats in their carriers and get them in the Van and just head inland and wait it out. Im hopeing that by the time it gets to Jersey its going to subside.

August 26th 2011 at 7:30 pm

yeah but she doesn't know where to drive too! She can't just drive inland and park the van in a parking lot somewhere with 17 cats. That's still not safe! BK's mom knows someone who will go and check on her. I'm just waiting for her to reply to me with her address. She might be stubborn about it, which I'm not too happy about.

Purr purr and more purrs I wish we could help but we are miles away at 80 she is doing pawsome to hire a van and all, purrs to her. Sounds like she needs someone to go there and give her a hand. I hope she's in a safe area if she does need to stay. Would her local SPCA know somewhere? Purrs Sam

I don't know but between Nuk & I we supplied her with a lot of phone numbers. Hopefully she'll USE them. She really is amazing but she's a tough nut. She was in WWII and started rescuing kitties when she was at Pearl Harbor!!

Thank you Cody, she must have evacuated because we've tried to get in touch today several times and no answer. So I'm sure they had a mandatory evacuation which I'm glad for actually.

Thank you all so very much! Of all the days to be a diary pick, MOL! Mom's gotta go put stuff away and eat something! Wow we have a lot of pawmails, emails and stuff. How wonderful to know how loved we are. We appreciate all of you so much!

Alfie that picture is PAWSOME and we're gonna change it before we have to go for a bit.

We've emailed Barb several times yesterday and today. BK's mom had a friend that was willing to go and check on her, (bless that man I'll tell ya). But we never heard back from Barb and that's not like her. So I don't think anything has happened to her, we're just hoping that because she was on the coastal area that they came and told her to GET OUT. I'm sure there are several places she can go with her kitties, I just hope she's listened.

I will be sure to let you all know when I do hear. Mom worries about her a lot. She has a heart condition and high blood pressure. We left her strict instructions awhile back that if anything should ever happen to her, that her son please contact my mom so we'd know. We can't stand the thought of never knowing what happened if we just don't hear from her.

Mom met her 3 years ago on a pet loss support group when she lost me. Barb had lost Scoutie the EXACT SAME WAY as me! In the car on the way to the ER. They always shared that devastation and heartache and mom feels bonded to her because of that. So yes, please purr for her. She's a wonderful lady.

Okay, gotta go! We'll check in again as much as we can, I promise. I have a lot of angel dust to spread and a lot of flying around to do!

Luv you guys!

Thank you Gumpy! I appreciate that and so does mom. Thanks Furs, that's a pawsome trophy! LOVE IT.

Can you guys all go and purr for Mr. Biggles? he's in very bad shape. Gumpy, he's got severe pancreatitis and an undiscovered heart condition. He's also got a bad fever and infection in his pancreas like I had. That's actually what did me in. We're super concerned! He's in the Power of the paw plus section.

You're welcome Gumpy. We knew you'd like to help or just offer support and his mommy really needs it! We did get an email from her tonight saying that his fever came down a little and his vital signs and breathing are GOOD! That's so PAWSOME. Oh our little Monida, so many sick friends. That's why we're still on here tonight.
