What Kind of Cat Breed Was DJ Ravioli? YouTube Star Facts

One of the world’s favorite cat rappers (yep—you read that right!), Moshow, has been making adorable YouTube videos with his rescue cats for the past seven years. One of his five cats, DJ Ravioli, was the subject of particular interest due to his unique features and fans being unable to figure out what breed he was. DJ Ravioli was, in fact, a Devon Rex.

Often seen donning chunky gold chains and other “rap-parel,” the beautiful ginger Devon Rex became a real feline star. DJ Ravioli was adored by Moshow’s fans not only for his beauty but also for how adorably he took everything in stride and appeared to be in a perpetual state of relaxation. Sadly, DJ Ravioli crossed the Rainbow Bridge in November 2022.

What Are Devon Rex Cats Like?

Devon Rex cats originated in England, where they were first bred in 1950. They are medium in size, short and slender, and come in a wide variety of colors including black, blue, chestnut, white, brown, and frost. Several eye colors are also possible in Devon Rex cats, and they have heart-shaped faces with large ears and a broad forehead. The lower part of the face is slimmer. Their elven features give them a pretty unique appearance.

Devon Rex cats are probably most well known for their fine, curly coats, which are believed to be the result of spontaneous mutation. The first Devon Rex was a cat called Kirlee, and he was born the odd one out amongst his straight-haired brothers and sisters. Devon Rexes are delicately framed but muscular, often playful, mischievous, and energetic.

Do Devon Rex Cats Make Good Pets?

Yes! This breed is known for being highly affectionate, friendly, and loyal. They greatly enjoy human company and will happily receive attention and affection. As an intelligent breed, they also need lots of mental and physical stimulation. A Devon Rex loves interacting and playing with their humans, whether chasing after a string or following their favorite people here, there, and everywhere.

Their social natures make them a good fit for families with other pets and children, as long as they have been taught to interact respectfully with them. Having other cats is a good idea, too, and for a Devon Rex, the more friends to play with, the better! They’re also very curious and enjoy being perched up high so they can watch the world go by.

They’re not usually the most vocal breed. That’s not to say they won’t ever meow, but they’re less loud on average than, for example, Siamese cats. They don’t shed much, either, so their fine, soft coats make them ideal for cat parents who don’t want to vacuum up cat hair too often.

Devon Rex cats live for 9–15 years on average and generally enjoy good health. That doesn’t mean they never get sick—all cats have the potential to develop health conditions. Two conditions, in particular, to watch out for in Devon Rexes are Patellar Luxation and Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.

How Much Is a Devon Rex?

Buying a Devon Rex from a breeder will usually set you back between $600 and $1,500. They’re quite rare, which explains why breeders sell them at such a high price. Adoption is an alternative. A Devon Rex will get a loving home (like DJ Ravioli, who is also a rescue), and you’ll be paid back with a lot of love!

Rescue centers often ask for a donation of between $75 and $150 when you adopt to help with the needs of other cats in their care. This is much cheaper than what breeders charge and allows rescuers to continue their excellent work. The only issue is that it might not be that easy to find a Devon Rex since they’re likely to be snapped up pretty quickly by people desperate to adopt them.

Final Thoughts

So, there you have it! DJ Ravioli was a ginger Devon Rex cat owned by the YouTube cat rapper Moshow. If you haven’t already, be sure to go check out his videos—they’re just the cutest. Even though DJ Ravioli has passed, Moshow still uploads old videos of this Devon Rex superstar. If you’re considering adopting a Devon Rex yourself, you’ll take home a small cat with a big personality and an even larger amount of love to give.
