Important information and lesson learned

Hi every fur!! First I'd like to say that I know we've been tagged several times to play the new tag game. I'm so sorry but we don't have time to play it. It's really hard to play tag because it takes a lot of time to look up and create links to kitties pages and so forth. Last time we played we were tagged 15 times!!! Now we love that everyone considers us so much fun we get tagged that much, MOL. But it's too much time spent on that stuff and mommy is behind on her work. Plus the last couple of days her migraines have been OFF THE CHARTS! So please forgive all 3 of us if we can't play that game. Mommy prefers to play games in diaries that way we only answer things once.

Anyways, most of you got this already because you're on our newsletter for our website but we feel it's important enough to repeat this for those of you that aren't. (You can be if you want to, just let us know and we'll sign you up). This is from my mommy:

I wanted to get this info out to you considering this dangerous heat we’re in all over the country and even the world right now. Yesterday we learned a very valuable lesson here at my house that I wanted to share with all of you so you don’t have the same thing happen.

As many of you know, I live upstairs from my elderly parents (in their 80s), and care for them. We also take care of my sister’s cat Midnight who stays on the first floor of the house with my folks. Let me first say that my parents adore her probably more than any other pet we’ve ever had. Midnight stays with my dad in his computer room during the day and watches over him, and when they’re watching tv in the living room, she stretches out on my mom on the recliner. Yesterday my dad accidentally locked Midnight out in the inside porch, which IS screened and wide open to air, but it’s where their a/c’s backside is positioned from their kitchen window, and that’s where the hot air blows! He looked for her before closing the door and locking it but she must have been hiding under the chair or something. My mom came home from doing groceries about an hour later and found her limp! It must have been almost 100 degrees out there. She’s fine, she drank plenty of water and managed to eat some dry food and hold it down, the wet food, not so much. She threw up several times yesterday and last night. My dad felt SO bad he almost cried. If she would have died, he never would have forgiven himself. It was no one’s fault, this could happen to any one of us, doesn’t have to be someone elderly.

She’s doing much better, eating like a horse, played and is feeling great. My poor mom cried and kissed her all day and told her she loves her so much! This was a tough lesson to learn and one that could have turned very tragic. I wanted to share this with you all so you know that even when we think we know where they are, we should make SURE we know where they are. Especially during any kind of extreme weather be it heat waves or freezing weather. Don’t worry about Midnight, she’s sucking up all the love and mega kisses we’re willing to give her. She can’t get enough of them as far as she’s concerned and everyone is willing to oblige.

Again, please keep yourself and your pets hydrated! Leave PLENTY of fresh, clean water out for them, even some additional bowls in different rooms if you can. Try putting some ice cubes in their water dishes, they’re fascinated by it and it gets them to drink. Also, if you don’t have a/c please make sure you have several fans on in your house and try to keep doors to the hottest rooms closed so they can’t go in there. For some reason (like Midnight did) they will lay down in very hot rooms! Don’t know why, seems crazy to me but it’s up to us to control that. You can also take a cool towel or compress and put it on their little pads if they get hot. If your pet is not drinking enough water and they seem a little bit drained, give them a some cool water (not cold) in a medicine syringe just to get them drinking.

And I’m sure you all know this already but NEVER leave your pet, any pet, in your car. Even with the windows cracked open, the temperature can exceed 100 degrees in there. If you see any animals in a car anywhere with the windows up or even cracked, please report this to the police immediately! You may save a pet’s life. If you have ferals in your neighborhood try to leave as much water out for them in a cool and shady place as you can. Also, if you have elderly neighbors at all please try and check on them, make sure they are okay and make sure their pets are okay as well as they may not be able to themselves.

Thanks for reminding everyone about extra water and the heat. So sorry to hear about Midnight, but am glad all turned out well.
We have water in different rooms, and even have water outside for critters. We also have a small goldfish pond...some of them drink from. During the day we try to keep the pump running for the fish...after all the water in a small area heats up too. We don't want fried fish that way.
Everyone please use common sense in these hot days....think of everyone and everything.
Have a great day.

Thanks for understanding about the game everyone. Sorry Nellie, I know you pawmailed me sweetie! I feel bad.

Kibbles that's excellent that you keep fresh water flowing in the pond. No fried little fishies. Mommy just went outside and put fresh cool water in the bird bath too! She'll do it again in an hour or so just to make sure the birdies have clean, cool water to drink and they don't cook in there either.

Hi Tabbies, he has, he's okay now as long as Midnight is okay and she's fine. It's actually my mommy's daddy so it's my grampy. But it really was so dangerous and he felt so awful for 2 days! Midnight is soaking up all the loving big time, she's FINE! MOL. It's really easy for us kitties to sneak into spots they can't find us. So our parents have to make sure to REALLY look good! Cause we are all little poopheads (that's what my mom says anyways!)

I've been tagged by 3 super sweet kitties, I've got to get mommy on writing the answers for me! Sheesh mommy, I'm more important than work!

Don't worry about the game - I think that's the reason each one is tagging so many, because some can, some can't. I was tagged twice and will be playing soon. And not everyone can make links, so you can play with or without them.
We're SO glad that Midnight is okay!!! Honestly, that's quite a scare, and fortunately, there were no lasting effects. I would hate to see the gparents have to go through a guilt trip. Luv, Tink

She's doing good except today she's thrown up a couple of times but she's been doing that before this heat wave. She seems to have a TON of hair caught in her intestines and in this heat (it's now officially 93 with a heat index of 105), nobody is feeling good. Even with all the a/c's in the house on and fans going, it's still lousy hot! Me and Finney are fine, just sleeping but she's got health conditions so I think it's tough for any kitty in her position. Mom's been giving her hairball stuff though and also some of the aloe vera liquid in her food and it seems to be helping. Not so much of that stuff coming back up now. They brush her constantly and she's a short hair besides that.

Yes, it is way to hot to work....I went in to do some work but in the office at the school, it is air-conditioned.....At home, we leave the fans on 24/7 for the cats and ourselves...It will break on Sunday so hang in there. Migraines are painful and the heat doesn't help much...You need to get sleep and relax for those migraines. I get them and Natasha and Alex don't understand why I run back and forth to the bathroom for hot compasses for my forehead. Take care of yourself.....
I am sure that Midnight is fine now. She has such a good family.
The tag game was fun....thanks....Yes, I agree about those pets in cars. I don't hesitate to call the police.....It involves more dogs than cats although I saved one about fifteen years....Cats just don't like to shop....

We've had over 100 degree heat for weeks now. Water is very important!

Wow, that is so scary!! I'm glad Midnight is okay! The temperature hasn't really gotten much higher then 75 degrees up here. No need for air conditioners yet! Mom says its very weird that is is so wet cold and rainy hear at this time of year. It is usually good weather in July. Mom says she needs to get an air conditioner soon, she says she hopes that it does get hotter because it just doesn't feel like summer yet here.

We said it in the e-mail we sent you and we'll say it again. We are so relieved to hear that Midnight is okay. What an awful thing to have happen.

It was really hot here today too. I don't think we broke 100 but the radio was reporting a 'real feel' temp of 100 because of the humidity. This is one of those times we thank our lucky stars that most of our apartment is really dark--it keeps the indoor temp down. We were running fans like crazy and Mom kept adding ice cubes to our water.

Blade be careful what you wish for! REALLY! Mom likes it warm too but it's only 10:30 am and it's already 100 degrees with a heat index of 103 and going to get to almost 110 today! That's crazy for NH! Mom just went out to bring the trash bin back in from the curb and omg she said it's enough to make her want to throw up. Those poor city workers!

Oh Nellie, I hope your mommy's seizures are under control. My mommy's are caused by all kinds of things. Allergies, environment, hereditary, on and on. Most of the time her medicine makes them all better but yesterday she said she was ready to go and play on a train track. That's not something I like to hear!

Oh Nellie, tell your mommy mine knows the pain of those migraines. She has one every single day! Has one right now actually, woke up with it. She's also got fibromyalgia so this heat lately has been making her flail her legs all over the place at night when she's TRYING to sleep. Mommy says sometimes she feels like putting a stick of dynamite in her neck to get the "junk" out of there!

Glad to hear Midnight and your folks are okay. Those are all good reminders and info on how to keep us healthy in the heat.

Another thing to remember is to leave garage doors open only as long as you must. We have a neighbor down the street who lets their kitties out and one day meowmie was doing yard work and left the garage door open. When she went to put the tools back in, one of the neighbor's kitties was in the garage. She shooed her out, but now, every time she opens the garage she checks to make sure no kitties have gotten in. The garage can get very hot and there is no way out except for a human to open the door. Please be careful everyfur!

When my mommy was growing up they had an outdoors only cat. She was just a kid and didnt know anybetter until years later. Well the cat mostly lived in the garage of all things. but they had to check for her and even put fans in there for her during the hot weather. She was usually too smart to get locked in during the hot weather, but she INSISTED on going in the garage at night time. I guess she didnt want to get in a fight with the possums that freqented the naighborhood at night.

But one of the naighbors cats (who was also outside, at one point there were 25 outdoor cats on the little deadend street) got into another naighbor's garage. the garage did not have but one tiny window. Well my mommy heard the cat in there and saw the other naighbor looking for her cat. unfortuantly the two naighbors did not get along but my mommy happened to have thier emergancy housekey which also opened the garage. she went in and got the feline, put him in a basket and took him inside its owners home for some AC and TLC. He spent the night inside and then was back out the next day ready to go. But again, this was before she knew better.
