Anybody know how to clip a kitty's nails when you have no help from another person? Btw, this is Finney's mommy, he'd have a fit if he knew I was writing this in his diary.
well, my mom picks me up, holds me in her arms like a baby then starts snipping the nails, one paw at a time.....sometimes she can only get one paw done but usually I am pretty good because I know there are TREATS...... I might sit still but Lacey won't. She's a squirmy wormy. daddy used to purrito us and clip...nw he calls a profurrsional for them...he got tired of being clawed Well meomy did purrito Lacey once and got it done but she's nervous to do it again. Our friend Rick used to come over and help but because he doesn't come over much anymore now we run and hide and Lacey gets REALLY scared and shakes and everything. Mom doesn't want to have to put her through that if she doesn't have to. I'm more easy going. Okay so mommy purritoed us and cut both of our front nails. She doesn't know how she'll do the back ones now though. Thanks A LOT Harley! MOL. ok what is "purritoed"??? tomorrow is another day, thinkin' maybe hind feed??!! hey quick question I have a little red rash on the back of my ear and I get these red bumps above my eye then they go away and come back....what could this be? Whoops!!!! MOL! Sorry Harley, it was Tigger that said purritoed. That's being wrapped in a towel so we can't move! How can she do the hind feet? It was hard enough to wrap her legs around us and do the front ones. Sounds like you're allergic to something Harley. Put him in a pillowcase. First put the back end in to do the front paws, then put him in head first to do the back. Cats are calmer with their heads covered anyway. Mom keeps old pillowcase in our emergency kit. WHHHAAAAA???!!! Nobody puts Finney in a pillowcase. I will not let mommy catch me! Meowmy picks us up, calms us with pets, and then gently turns us over...takes hold of our neck and holds us like a mammy kitty would do, then she takes a paw in the other hand, and slowly lets go og=f our neck,and then uses the nail clipper...of course we squirm to make it take longer, cause we like the lap part...MOL, but not the clipping part! Meowmy has used some clothespins to hold our neck skin, in a mimic scruff hold, then she can use 2 hands to do the deed... Purrs! Hmmmm, the only problem is my neck is all muscles and even when Rick was here he had a hard time holding it. But she'll give that a try. Mom gets Stephanie to do it! But - Stephanie puts us on da smooth kitchen floor so we can't dig in. Then she kneels down and straddles us, crossing her feet so we can't get out the back way. Then she start one foot at a time doin' the front feet first (cause they usually need it more). Back legs not as hard, she usually get them while we sleepin'. Only other way you could do it is sit on the floor (legs under you) then put the kitties between your legs with a towel wrapped around them or not. The bend over so you can see their paws and clip...that is how Mom does the doggies, it may work for your kitties... Good Luck!!!! I hate to be held so Mom would practically sit on me to clip my nails. She would do the straddle thing like Purincess Miranda mentioned. I got better about it lately. I think I am too old to put up much of a fight anymore. Oh lord, none of this sounds fun for me! But my nails were like steak knives in the front so mommy says she's determined to get the back ones. My mom usually waits until I'm napping and then clips a couple at a time while I'm relaxed and semi-sleeping. She usually only gets to clip 2-3 nails. This takes several days to get all of the claws (less days if you only have three paws), but it's less stressful for all involved. That's what she's gonna have to do I think Artie. She already got our front ones now so it'll be less to do but she doesn't like the idea of sitting on us. She doesn't want to make us afraid of her. I'm easy to do. Mommy lets me eat, waits for me to sack out on the couch back, comes up and gently squeezes my paws and clips. I'm pretty good. Daddy does Smokies the same way. The Bub is a 2 hander cat....mommy needs help with her and CK because they are squirmy. I don't like Daddy holding me like he does with my siblings, so Mawmee waits until I'm sleepy and does a few nails at a time. Meowmy straddles us too, but that is only for pills. She has never clipped our nails, I hope she does not get any ideas of doing it now! Harley, one other thought, you might have ear mites-hope not! Mom does the same as Art - she can get one to two nails at a time. She rarely does my back nails though. Congrats on being a DDP Finney! Mom never ever clips back nails. They don't get pointy and we chew them ourselves.Hasn't she seen you do that? Don't tell me~ you don't do that. MOL Love, Milo I'm really easy and just sit there and let my momma do them - she says the dogs are harder to do! The Mama handles this problem easily...she lets the Papa do it! MOL!!! It may be time again, because Sleeper was being kittenish the other night and chasing her tail and got her claw stuck in her tail! The Mama went to help her, though she probably would have got it out on her own. Congrats on your DDP! MOL~ Love all da ideas~ But mom won't do mine~! Best to do it when we r all sleepy 'n relaxin' 'n Milo likes to be brushed 'n so dat iz a purrfect time to trim his front paws. Mom don't clip our back ones either. Milo got used to it long time 'go when her would 'handle' him pawsies lotz. When in da mood, he lovez all kindz o' touchies 'n feelies~! MOL!! But for one thing, Mom uses small human clippers. Mom thinks those animal ones seem awkward to use and are too big. The small human ones are sharp and easy to use. My sis and I are okay with having our nails clipped. Nadi can be a little squirmy, but she's okay about it. My big orange bro Mango was a different story. He was a strong boy and didn't want to have his paws messed with. Mom or my grandpawrents would use some heavy duty gloves with him and sometimes wrap him in a towel to clip his nailies. Have fun with your DDP, buddy....and good luck to your mom with getting your nails clipped. It's so bad when out claws get stuck on carpets and furniture.... HEY! I'm a DDP! WWWHHHHHEEEEEEE! MOL. Guess what - mom was online looking at kitties up for adoption at a local shelter (she's not adopting, she just likes to look at pictures) and she came across a long-haired orange boy named Finney!!!!! Chico and myself just let mom clip our nails, and Sampson and Nakita throw a hissy fit and bite mom. She manages to get a few of theirs here and there. Congrats on your DDP!!! Mom admittedly would have a hard time trimming our nails without the help of Dad. He makes us into a purrito wrap with a really thick blanket so that our back claws don't dig in and scratch him while Mom trims the front nails. We do squirm a lot and it's not easy, but she manages to trim all of our nails. I don't like it one bit! Hi Sammy! Mommy says you guys are lucky to have 2 people to do this. So mommy managed to get Lacey's back claws while she was sleeping on the tower. She tried with me but I had none of it. MOL. Mom says she needs to read all these comments. She wants ideas too. *Help* Don't forget to ask your vet to clip them every time you're there anyway. They usually do that for free. Hi again, Finney...meowmy left fur her work after she sent that pic...and now after many hours, are you still having all of your nails?? MOL! The important thing to remember about nail clipping is TREATS! I set them on the bathroom sink & closes the door (only for Smitty cause he tries to escape. they are facing to my right. Then I put my left arm around their shoulders to kind of pin them in place, and snip snip snip. I also find the human nail clippers easier more clean cut. I don't even have to hold Maizy - she will grumble at me, but sits nice. Smitty is a big boy too, and he sort of wilts to try & get away. But I only do front ones mostly. Back ones every so often & NEVER at the same time as front. I pushed that once, and that is when Smitty skunked me. phew won't do that again! PLus I try & touch their paws & spread their toes all the time so it is not as upsetting. Well she will have to get used to it I guess and so will we. HMMPPHHH! I don't like it but I really don't like getting my nails caught in everything either. Theres not a man, woman, or child big enough to clip my nails!! I would rip their face off, and shove it in their pocket!!!! My nails have NEVER been clipped. I'm wif Simone on this one!! Poke 'em in da nose!!! Get 'em, don't take that stuff!!!! MEOW!!! MC loved it 'cause I make beeskits on her tummeh and leave claw marks but not after gettin' 'em trimmed. They grew out and I am back to claw markin' her tummeh!
