Happy happy joy joy, happy happy joy joy! Today was the day 3 years ago that my life changed forever. My mommy did NOT want anymore pets after Alex died. She was distraught and depressed and couldn't stand the thought of going through that again. Mommy's vet knows her well and knew that Alex's death was so hard on her that she was not doing well at all.
Shelly (our vet) found me on the side of the road at only a couple of months old, covered in fleas and sneezing up a storm with boogies in my nosey and eyes. Gee I can't even remember that now! She took me home and nursed me back to health, cleaned me up, watched me as I ran around her house with all of her other pets and getting lost in the shuffle of all of them. I was getting hyper and not knowing where to put myself.
Shelly called mommy and asked her if she wanted me and mommy said no way. Nope. No more. Okay she said, but think about it. Then a week or two later, another phone call. "I really think you should take him, we have too many pets in the house as it is and we'll certainly keep him for sure if you don't want him but he'd be better off with you. I can't think of a better mom for him than you." SIGH. Nope. Hard to say that but mom still said NO!
Then one day a couple of weeks later Shelly called mom and said she needed to talk to her about kitties with IBD and had some information she wanted to give her. HEH HEH HEH. Sneaky Shelly. So mom said okay and went down there. When she got there she was presented with a certificate of donation to Cornell University from all of the staff in Alex's name in the amount of $100 for IBD research. Mom started to cry. They loved Alex so much and they were so good to her. It was beautiful and wonderful.
Then when mommy didn't see it coming, she went in the exam room with Shelly and TADAAAAAAA! There I was, sitting and squirming on the exam table. Just a little orange peanut. Oh mommy was so MAD. She told Shelly, "how can you do this to me? You know how scared I am of getting another one". Shelly told mom she was the best kitty mom she ever met and that she couldn't go on with this open wound in her heart. So mom talked with her for awhile and against her better judgement took me home.
Boy was I a handfull. Crazy, climbing curtains, scratching stuff, ARRRGGHHH!! Mommy was going nuts. She thought about giving me back to Shelly. Now before anyone gets too upset she really was having a difficult time. She'd gone from a critically ill kitty to a crazy looney toon like me. It was a shocker. BUT, mom thought about it and said "when I make a commitment I stick to it." So she kept trying.
One day something happened. I was growing so fast she had to get me a new collar. It was supposed to be one of those breakaway collars! Yeah right. I got it caught on the lower part of my jaw and it was cutting into my tongue and choking me. Mommy and Rick were trying desperately to open the latch and it would NOT give at all! So mommy yelled to get the scissors and she cut it off. I was so scared, I didn't know what was happening. Well mommy hugged me and cried and kissed me and said no more collars for you and she was so sorry.
That was the day she realized she loved me. Foibles and all. So here I am, 3 years later, a big giant boy still growing into my huge Maine Coon body. Lately I have been lovin' on mommy big time! I love my mom and my Lacey bug, grammy and grampy, my aunties and uncles from Catster and from our website and all of my wonderful furriends!
Mom feeds us nothing but good foods, no junk like poor Alex had. We are in great health (knock on wood, no jinxing it please) and we're furry happy kitties. Life is grand and I am one lucky, lucky boy! Thank you Shelly for knowing that my mommy was the right one! And thank you all for being such pawsome friends and always having fun with us, laughing and even sometimes crying but always supporting.
This is a pawsome day!
