"Purr! I've found my furever home at last thanks to Auntie Emily & Auntie Jen. Won't you be my furriend?"

Home:Carrollton, GA  [I have a diary!]
Age: 6 Years   Sex: Male   Weight: 8 lbs.

Because I'm black and blind, my chances of adoption from the kill shelter were slim. I'm lucky some Crazy Cat Ladies heard about me! Now I'm home to stay!

This was my 'kill shelter' photo. Meowmy saw it when Alana of Blind Cat Rescue asked her to post it on Catster. She knew I didn't deserve to die because I'm blind and black. (Can you believe some folks still think black cats are bad luck??)

I love playing featherstick! I jump so fast, Meowmy has a hard time making my picture. I listen for the feathers and the bell, then I POUNCE!

This was my first time going down stairs. I'm running up and down now. I'd never experienced stairs before.

Blind cats love to explore, just like other cats. I've only been in my furever home for a couple of hours, and already I'm finding my way around.

Do you like my pretty new blue collar with a blue bell? I love to hear it jingle!

I figured out how to get under the chair...now I'm working my way out. It's okay, Meowmy. I can do it all by myself!

Arrival Story:
Alana, director of Blind Cat Rescue, asked me to post on Catster and Facebook about a blind black cat high on the kill list at a Greenville, SC shelter. He had been abandoned and was picked up by the shelter there. Unfortunately, many people still consider black cats bad luck, and many more will not adopt a special needs kitty. After a few days, we couldn't work out a safe haven for Bones, as he was called. Being partial to blind cats and black kitties in particular, what could I do? Thankfully, Emily and Jen were able to transport, and soon Bones made the journey from SC to GA. His Gotcha Birthday is March 4, 2010! Bones arrived with flea dermititis, a skin condition due to excessive fleas. His skin is looking better now, and his fur is beginning to grow back on his tail and back legs. I think he'll be a handsome boy once he has his hair all back again. He's a very loving boy and so interested in exploring his surroundings! Blind cats get around so much better than most people think. Within two hours of being home, Bones had jumped on the coffee table and climbed two chairs.

Bio:
Bones amazes us. By the time we'd had him two weeks, he could navigate the house perfectly, including going to the basement for the scratch boxes. The only thing that frightens him is sudden, loud noises. He's just not sure what is going on, so he immediately runs to me for reassurance. Bones loves to play! He likes to tussle with his brofurs, and his favorite game now is feather stick. Yes, blind cats can play feather stick. It's impressive how he'll listen for the bell and feathers, hunker down, then pounce, right on target. He never misses!

Blind Cat Rescue & Sanctuary was started to answer the need for a safe place for blind cats that were deemed unadoptable by regular shelters and were going to be killed just because they are blind. We are a registered non profit with the state of North Carolina. There are no paid employees, only volunteers, so all contributions go directly to the kitties. Rescue is about restoring hope and dignity to creatures for whom no one else cares about. We are but humble vessels to help these magnificent creatures find their forever homes. The responsibility is big but the returns on our emotional investment are greater. You cannot place a value on the look of contentment that comes when an animal is clean, exercised, warm, fed and safe for the first time in its life. Bones' Byline: Happenings of a Blind Black Cat

Blind Cats CAN See a Future!

My Meowmy asked me to write a diary entry today for a very special cause!

I'm special, 'cause I'm a blind cat. That's not so unusual in our family!

I have one brofur who is blind and one sisfur who is visually impaired. My angel sisfur, Scarlett, was blind while she was on Earth.

Did you know that even 'no-kill' shelters sometimes euthanize blind cats because they are considered 'unadoptable'?
Did you realize that a blind, black blind cat - like our ME and Charcoal - stands virtually no hope of adoption?
That cats can become blind due to birth defects, trauma, untreated disease, and yes, even human cruelty?

BUT...
Did you also know that blind cats love to climb??
That they love to play with cat toys??
That they run and jump and enjoy life JUST LIKE OTHER CATS?

AND...
Did you know that there's a very special place for blind cats? A place where they are treated with love, respect, and care? It's TRUE!

This heaven-on-earth for blind cats is Blind Cat Rescue & Sanctuary of North Carolina, featured in the June, 2010 issue of Cat Fancy. www.blindcatrescue.com
BCR is the dream and life's work of a very special woman, and the Sanctuary depends on the sponsorships of the cats and donations from caring people around the world.

But YOU can help BCR today and everyday in the Shelter Challenge at The Animal Rescue Site! It's FREE and EASY and it can truly make a difference.

Our Stevie, Scarlett, Charcoal, and ME are some of the lucky ones. They found a loving, caring home, thanks to messages sent to my Meowmy from BCR! Other kitties need the resources only a Rescue can provide.

Won't you help by voting today and every day during the contest for Blind Cat Rescue of NC? (Don't forget to confirm your vote by identifying the animal photo shown after you vote!)

All the blind kitties will purr in gratitude!!

A Step Forward for Eve!!

[ Leave A Comment | 2 people already have ]

So many of you have supported Meowmy, Mama Terry and their friends' quest to find Justice for Eve, the sweet kitten who died shortly after being adopted from Okefenokee Humane Society in Waycross, GA. You can read all about Eve on her Catster page:
http://www.catster.com/cats/1086369

I asked Meowmy to update you on a positive development!! A man from the GA Department of Agriculture answered Meowmy's (third) email to that office! He asked for Eve's medical records, saying they were necessary for an inquiry to proceed. Of course, Meowmy sent them right away. So it looks like someone has noticed us!! PURRRRRR!!!

This may take time. (Has the government ever moved quickly??) We promise to keep you updated when we have news.

For all who care about Eve, please take a moment and sign her petition, if you haven't already. It's never to late to take a stand for all the animals still at Okefenokee HS. Thank you for caring so much!!!!
