Arrival Story:
My pet sitter told me Grace's story, as she suspected I might be looking to adopt another cat after my previous cat had to be put to sleep. Grace was a stray who'd been roaming the residential city streets for several months, being fed by two ladies who lived on one of the streets. She was getting thinner and thinner, until they noticed she was suddenly fatter. She disappeared for a few days, then came back thin again, and they knew there was a litter to be found somewhere. Grace had found her way into a garage through a broken window, and had her five babies in a charcoal bin. After a couple of days, she left through the broken window to find food, and when she came back she found that the garage owner had boarded the broken window up. Grace dug a hole in the gravel driveway and squeezed her way in to get back to her kittens. The two ladies who took her and the kittens in put poster up all over the neighborhood, but no one claimed her. I was invited to see her and the kittens, and as soon as I took one look, I knew I had to take her home when she was ready. She's a very large framed Maine Coon mix, and she only weighed six pounds, while trying to feed five kittens. Her kind rescuers took excellent care of her and the whole litter. I also took one of the kittens, whom the rescuers named Shadow because she shadowed her mom all the time. My father died just 19 days after I brought Grace and Shadow home. I named the mom Grace thinking that I was her saving grace, and she turned out to be mine instead. I don't know what I would have done without Grace and Shadow during the sad winter of 2007.
