Arrival Story: One day, back in the winter of 1993-94, we were coming home. We must have startled Kitty, because we heard a rumbling in the trash can and saw a cat go tearing through the backyard. We figured the evil, evil people who lived next door to us moved out and left Kitty because he was injured. What was he injured with? His tail was skinned. Dad didn't want anyone to feed Kitty, but it was a cold, blizzardy winter, so of course we fed him and left him blankets to sleep on. He spent a lot of time sleeping under our porch that winter.
After a few weeks, Kitty was brought to the vet - his tail was gross and we couldn't look at him anymore without feeling horrible. (We called him Kitty all winter because we didn't think we'd actually have him forever, and the name stuck!) The vet said that his tail probably got caught in a door, and he ran, skinning the tail. The vet amputated the top half of his tail, leaving a 3 inch stump that sticks straight up. Also, the vet told us then that he was a neutered male (we weren't sure, he would never let us get close enough to check it out), which puzzled us - if someone cared enough to get him neutered, why'd they abandon him?
Kitty now has his own master suite on our back porch (which is mostly windows and like a greenhouse in the winter, but the windows are open in the summer so he gets a nice breeze off the water), complete with a space heater, a window seat, a bed (made special for him by dad), and a BIG bowl of food. Since he was (apparently) always an outside cat, any attempts to bring him inside to sleep have been met with great opposition, so the back porch was a good compromise for everyone.
Kitty's starting to turn into a crochety old man, but he's still really sweet. He'll run right in front of your car when you're pulling into the driveway, and meow and purr and weave in and out of your feet the whole way to the door. His voice is also a little raspy now, but it adds to his charm.
A little known fact about Kitty: if you hold him and pet him, he'll never leave, and he starts drooling. He has to know you pretty well to let you pick him up, but if he let's you, he's at your mercy. Also, watch out for his big, crazy, outdoor cat claws. He doesn't mean to hurt anyone, but when he gets comfy, he'll knead them into your leg, not realizing that he's probably hitting a major artery.
