Boo came to be with us because I needed a new friend for Kayli. Her best buddy of 14 years, and surrogate kitten of hers, had just suddenly died from saddle thrombosis (blood clot). Kayli's health just plumeted. She was obviously mourning and suffering from severe depression.
The only way I could think of getting her mind of losing Pumpkin, was to get her a new friend to think about. So I went looking for kitties that needed homes... had actually gone to PetSmart thinking I was going to see cats that had been abandoned in foreclosed houses, but the abandoned pet website wasn't dated correctly, so they were not there, but there was a local shelter having adoptions, so I went ahead and looked.
They had several kitties but they were over $100 each, when I looked in the bottom corner and there was a very pretty black brindle tortie who was adoptable for a bargain price of $25! She was very friendly, came up on lap right away and gave me lots of wet kisses. She was round little thing, pretty fluffy fur, and her coloring reminded me of Kayli's fur in places. I asked about her being so much less than the other kitties... and they said the words that just made me feel she was doomed -- "she's been in the system too long." She was about 1 year, 1 month old. I took her home. She howled all the way out to the car like she had her leg caught in a trap, jumped around in the carrier like she was being electrified, and howled all the way home. Oh brother! What a difference from the meeting room!
When I came in with the carrier, Kayli was sitting on the computer desk just looking at me. I told her I had something for her. I set the carrier on the top of the couch, opened the door and our new kitty just walked right out, walked the length of the couch, jumped right over to computer desk and layed down right next to Kayli. Kayli didn't move or make a sound. The two of them stayed like that and I left for kitty supplies. When I returned, the new kitty was still on top of the desk and Kayl had only moved to the computer chair.
Kayli stopped crying, stopping being sad, got her appetite back and in general just wanted to hang out with our new kitty. Eat with her, nap near her... just hang out with her.
New kitty - name was not found for a while - just liked to hang out under a chair in the back bedroom and look out the patio door. Sometimes she'd come see me to wash my hand or my chin and get a good rubdown, but if Kayli and I were together, she didn't seem to bother finding us or hanging out with us. I wasn't sure she wanted to be part of a family, but just as soon as I told my sister that on the phone a week later, she started coming in to see what we were doing, or sit and watch tv with us. Soon she was running and jumping down the hall, leaping up to the top of a 2 step cat place, to have her meals. Same place Pumpkin loved to eat.
She has a face that reminded me of fall in New England, of Halloween, dark nights and little bits of carmel... I tried fall names, like Amber, but it didn't seem to fit her. She has a shorter round body, a cobby cat, and a longer name didn't suit her... so putting all that together, I came up with Boo and it fits perfectly. Short little name and it's great for her coloring and reminding me of New England and Halloween.
