Arrival Story:
When we finally decided to adopt a cat, we checked around at some local (and some not-so-local) shelters for cats that needed homes. We found out about Daphne, who was at a no-kill shelter an hour from our house, and as cliched as it sounds, I knew she would be perfect. We drove out to meet her and saw her and thirty or so other cats in tiny cages in a room the size of a large closet. She had a bit of a cold, her ribs stuck out, she had a cut on her nose and another on her ear, and she was bright pink with flea powder, but she was very affectionate and we adopted her right away. After about three weeks and several trips to the vet, the cold had still not gone away, and seemed to be getting worse. Eventually she stopped eating and barely left her bed. When we gathered her up to take her to the vet again, she didn't even resist being put into her kitty carrier as she usually did. The vet kept her overnight for study. When she was returned to us, we were told that they did not know what was wrong with her and that she was going to die. My mother took her to another emergency vet to get a second opinion, but we weren't very hopeful. After several hours my mom returned home...with Daphne. The vet had prescribed...asprin. I was only eight at the time, and I don't know the exact reasoning that the vets used, except that they knew it would be tough to make her any worse than she already was. Oddly enough, it worked. That was nine years ago, and she's been healthy (if a bit chubby) ever since.

Bio:
We aren't sure what breed she is, but we think that she may be part Turkish Van, because she has longer hair than a short-haired cat would and she has the distinctive "eyebrow" markings of Vans. She is also bigger than most cats. Her previous owners declawed her completely (yup, all four paws, poor baby), which is one of the reasons that she is an indoor kitty.

Daphne's Diary

A Sad Day

After ten years of being our faithful feline friend, Daphne has become very ill.

Her face started to swell up about a week ago, and the veterinarian found that she had an abscessed tooth. He removed it, but the swelling only got worse. It has gotten so bad that right eye and nostril are constantly running, because the fluid cannot drain out of them. The vet took a biopsy and called us back today with the results - cancer.

It's basically taken over half of her face. It is inoperable and, since it has almost certainly invaded her lymphatic system, it will probably not respond well to chemotherapy or radiation. After much discussion we have decided to put Daphne to sleep on Friday.

The vet has put her on a narcotic for the pain. She doesn't act sick, but since the cancer is so advanced we figure that she is probably very uncomfortable.

We put up the Christmas tree today so that she could sit under it...she always loved to look at the lights from under the tree.
