My Very Scary Day

It seemed like it would be the same at first, the loud room with the screaming, yowling cats, my sister and I huddled in the back corner. I didn't understand why all the kitties in the room were trying to get out of their cages, as scary as it was inside the cage, outside seemed worse. The room was poorly lit, the cages dirty, we all had fleas. The dogs in the next room were barking so loud, it was so scary.

Alot of people came and went. Some of them took kittens from the room and I never saw them again, some of them left without taking a kitty home. A dark haired lady came in with the man who gave us food and came to my cage first. I was so scared I hid behind my sister. All the other kitties were trying to get her attention, I thought for sure she'd pick one of them but she was opening MY cage. I tried to get away from her but there was no where to go. She reached in and picked me up, I was too scared to do anything but let her hold me, I wanted to get away so bad. My poor sister just stared at us but she was less scared than me.

The lady looked at the man and nodded and put me back in the cage. I thought it was over. I ran behind my sister and started to shake. I was so happy when they left the room. But then he came back. The man came back with a box and he reached in my cage, picked me up then put me in the box. He carried the box down a long hall full of barking dogs and set me on a counter. Through the holes in the box I could see the lady, she was writing something and smiling. She didn't look so scary in the quiet room.

The lady carried the box out to her car and put me in the seat, then got in next to me. Even though she was driving she kept smiling at me, but she was crying too. I didn't understand. I put my face up to the hole to see her better, she was looking right at me.

Thats when she told me about Bella, my would-have-been fur sister who had to go to the rainbow bridge. The lady told me about how much she missed Bella and how there was a hole in her heart that needed filling. She told me that she was going to take me home and cuddle me and love me and give me beds and pillows and sunshine. I didn't understand those words, love and cuddle.

She didn't take me home, she took me to a VET. She said she worked there and that I had to stay here for a little while. She held me down, the doctor put a needle in my arm and took my blood. I didn't understand. After the doctor left the lady who took me from the shelter held me to her chest and started tickling me under the chin and the strangest thing happened: I started rumbling! When I started purring the lady smiled so big I thought that her face might split in half! She bent down and kissed me head and then I understood about love, and about cuddle.

I haven't gone home with the lady yet, she said soon though, but I love her. She pets me all day and plays with me and even though I am getting over a bad cold I am happy.

She picked me even though I was scared, even though I didn't think I wanted to be picked, she saved me. I love her.
