When I moved into my current apartment, it was my first time living on my own (outside of a college dorm) so I wanted to have some company. I really wanted a kitten so I could raise it from day one. I went to North Shore Animal League to adopt one, but it was an off-season for kitties. The only kittens they had were swooped upon by a family who were just a few steps ahead of me. I took it as a sign that I was not meant to find my kitty there and started to walk out. As I did, I spotted out of the corner of my eye this white ball of fur huddled in the corner of its cage. I turned to look at her and her yellow eyes bored into my soul. I asked one of the shelter employees if he could take her out for me so I could give her a test drive and after only a few seconds of petting her she crawled right into my arms. She had me at "meow."
