Arrival Story: We had adopted Queenie about a month before looking for a kitty to keep her company via the SPCA. We were looking for another female and went to check one out. The house was full of kids and kittens and at least one large dog and the tallest domestic cat on the planet named Clark. The minute we laid eyes on this cute little gray and white tabbyish kitten we fell in love. After my husband dutifully checked under the tail to make sure it was a girl we said we'd take her.
A few days later we went to the SPCA lady's house (which turns out to be a block away from where we live now!). She brought us down to her basement so she could give us our little bundle of joy and broke the news.. she was actually a HE kitty and also had a broken paw. She didn't know how it happened, but when she picked him up his right paw had been broken straight across the knuckles (you know what I mean!) so she guessed he was either stepped on or it got caught in a door or something. Anyway... he had a spoon on his paw and didn't care for it one bit. He kept trying to shake it off and was not used to walking with it yet.
OK, so we have the new kitty and it's time to bring him home. It was kinda cold out that October night so my husband put him inside his coat to keep him warm between the car and getting upstairs to our apartment. Judging by Queenie's reaction when we opened the door, you would have thought Mort was an alien popping out of dad's chest! She hissed like mad and is still hissing at him 13 years later! After a week or so of Queenie's hissing, Mort realized that the spoon on his paw was actually a weapon and quickly learned how to bop Queenie in the head with the spoon. It was a hysterical sight and he got really, really good with it!!

Bio: Morty is a very loving kitty, even to Queenie, even though she still resents his existence. When we were thinking of names we knew it had to start with "M" because of the M on his forehead. He is named after a racoon we took a picture of while we were dating, which we had named Mort. He is also a mamma's boy and sleeps with her every night, without fail. He will make his way upstairs after he hears mom going up and will wait patiently in the hallway until she climbs into bed. Once there he will come up and snuggle (read: get petted and scratched along and under the chin and purr like crazy) until mom rolls over then moves to his favorite nighttime sleep spot - between mom's feet. Usually Queenie (a daddy's girl) is laying against dad's leg and hisses as he passes by, but he doesn't care -- he's with MOM :-)
In August of 2004, Morty was diagnosed with diabetes. He got real sick real fast -- to the point where he could not jump up onto the furniture or the bed -- and developed some serious neuropothy. It took several visits to the vet, two types of insulin and a few all day sessions at the vet to check his levels until we hit the magic combination of 1.75 units of PZI insulin twice a day and one crushed up Xobaline (methyl B12) tablet in his breakfast. The B12 is helping Morty get back on his tippytoes and he is now chasing bottle caps again and can jump on the couch and the bed (most nights) again. He is such a trooper, it's amazing! When he was really sick, he would try to climb the stairs and was having such a hard time, he would let me carry him and place him on the bed. Once he started feeling better, he insisted on doing the stairs himself, even though it took him a while, and pulling himself up onto the bed. It's been about a month now since he first jumped onto the bed again. I was ecstatic! Every once in a while he will still pull himself up, but that's OK.

Today while mom was going through stuff in the basement I came upon something I have not seen in years! I found the binky! The orange binky! I couldn't believe it at first. I had to climb over two chairs to get to it but when I finally did I had to lay on it. I started getting a little weepy because it still had me & Queenie's scent on it. I felt like I had gone back in time to where we used to live seven years ago.
The binky was an orange blanket that was folded up at one end of the couch and was Queenie's favorite spot. She would kneed it and lick it every single day and literally ate a huge hole in it. I'm not kidding! I'm talking crater! It took her about eight years to do it :-) Maybe *that's* why she's so big!
Sometimes I would lay on it when she fell asleep somewhere else but when she woke up and found me there she would always come over and hiss at me until I moved. It was also where we got into one of our first fights as kittens and I bopped her with my spoon! When we moved, mom & dad hid it from her because they were afraid she would eventually eat the whole thing! I thought it was long gone but it was buried under stuff in the basement all this time!
Mom saw me sitting on it with this far away look on my face and my eyes were tearing so she came over and picked me up and gave me some mom love. As soon as she put me down I went straight back to it. Wow, all the memories are flooding back to me. *sigh* I know this may sound strange, but I started missing her tonight.
Uh-oh, mom just walked in and said it's time to go to bed, so I better go now.
Sweet dreams!

Hello Kitties,
My, what a difference since the last time I wrote! I feel sooo much better now that my blood sugar has settled down. I have pancreatitis, which is not good for a diabetic kitty, but after two accupuncture sessions and some special food added to my diet and a few adjustments to my insulin dosage, I am jumping and practicing my soccer dribble. Mom has been giving me grapes to play with and I am really lovin' that! They roll so nice. Sometimes I will dribble the grape down towards mom and then pass it to her :-) She almost always passes it waaay past me so I have to run for it and get it back into play. Hhhuh I'm right here! Pass it to meeee! Other times, it's right in the 'numbers' :-)
I have been jumping a lot more and a lot higher lately too, and have been running, really fast, around the house. I have more energy than I know what to do with sometimes! This is awesome! The other night I raced mom upstairs and I won :-) She was so proud of me. Sometimes now when I jump on the bed I jump higher and land softly on the covers. No more clawing my way up.
A few days ago mom was curling up the strings for the blinds in the backroom and out of nowhere I raced to my throne, jumped up, flipped on my back and just started going nuts playing with the little plastic ends! It was so much fun! It startled mom at first because I came out of nowhere. purrrr.
That's my update for now. Take care all!
Love,
The Mortyman
P.S. Happy Birthday, Queenie, you big 'ol furball!

Wow, I didn't realize I haven't written in soooo long! So much has happened since the last time I wrote. Mom and I are really enjoying Dad and Queenie being gone :-) I get *all* of Mom's attention now. Purrrrrrr.
Lately tho, maybe the last two months, I haven't been feeling very well. For some reason my diabetes got wacky and I have lost about a third of my body weight even though I'm eating! Mom has been taking me to that place... where they stick needles in me and all those slobbery dogs are around... just about every Saturday. I used to try and fight it, but I gave up. *sigh* They are trying to help me, so I suppose I will let them ;-)
My back legs are almost skin and bones, but I still work on my muscles whenever I can. I climb up and down the stairs a few times every night and I always come upstairs to make sure Mom doesn't oversleep. I'm such a good boy :-) Some days I can jump better than others, but I always try. I guess I'm stubborn that way!
To make matters worse, I have managed to slip a disc in my back! A little below my shoulder blades and it really couldn't be in a worse place! Since I am on insulin, they can't give me steroids so Mom has me going to accupuncture. More flippin' needles!!!! But, I can say that I get really relaxed afterwards and I think it's helping. Now, if I can just get back up to my playing weight (15 lbs) and be able to bat around some plastic bottle caps I would be one happy, happy kitty.
It's been warm here lately and Mom has been leaving the windows open for me. I love listening to the birds and the warm breeze feels soooo good. I am an indoor kitty but when I am in the back room on my "throne" I feel as thought I'm out there.
OK, Mom is getting ready to have her supper so I need to take my place on the couch. Most nights she gives me a little of what she's eating as long as it's not too spicey or sweet. I *love* people food!
Take care and I will try to write more often!!
