Arrival Story:
Giger was a feral cat that lived in the woods near our home. He was a skinny, skittish, kinda beat up & scroungy looking fella. Did I say skittish? He would not come within 6 yards of humans. We would set food out on the patio for him, then retreat & watch him cautiously come up and eat, then escape back into the woods. We began to place the food away some distance away from the patio, then go to the patio to sit motionless & wait until the cat would slowly creep forward & eat. Ever so slowly over time (about 6 months), we kept moving the food closer & closer until finally the cat would come up onto the patio and eat as long as we were sitting motionless. Trying to touch the cat was another story. The slightest move, and ZOOM-the cat took off. Until one day, while eating fairly close to one of our chairs, one of us just reached down and made a grab for the cat. It really had to be done. He was showing up more & more looking roughed up--sweetie cat was getting beat up in the woods. Talk about one scared cat, though, when we picked him up for the 1st time. Well, we took him in, had to have him quarantined at the vet for a month until the all clear came that he was safe around our other (3) cats at the time. Once home for good, Giger seemed to imprint himself like a baby duck to his new care-taker. That cat must have been so grateful to be out of the harsh outdoors, he learned to purr (something he didn't know how to do at first), and he hasn't stopped since. His fur grew out from scraggly to fluff-ball, and he is just our sweetie pie. We are so glad we took the time to lure him to us. Don't ever listen to anyone who says a feral cat cannot be civilized. He is probably THE most lovable & loving cat we both have ever known.

Bio:
Giger is named after the artist, H.R. Giger (perhaps most commonly known as the artist who did the original artwork of the famous alien in the Alien movie series). Much of Giger's artwork is in gray tones, making it a fitting name for this very gray cat.

Sorry to Interrupt

Dear Diary,
I had my day all planned out today. Morning agenda: lounge on sofa. Afternoon agenda: nap on bed. Wouldn't you know it, my routine got interrupted. I hate when that happens. First, one of the folks highjacked me from my morning activities. "Sorry to interrupt," they said, "but you need some grooming." They proceeded to brush me until my fur got very poofy & fluffed out all over. I suppose I'll pardon them for that interruption. It felt nice. I still had my afternoon plans to look forward to.

Then, come noonish, I found that I had been shut out of the bedroom. Another interruption in my plans, dog-gone-it. I had absolutely no luck meowing the door open to get in for an afternoon nap. I had to make adjustments to my afternoon agenda & ended up half-napping on the dining room chair. There were quite a few distractions, so it was hard to work my way into a nice, lengthy snore.

With all those unexpected interruptions in my plans for today, unless I hit the sack early tonight I don't think I'm going to make my daily quota of zzzzz's. I certainly don't want that to happen, so I best head for the bed pretty quick. So, next stop: Land of Nod. I'm giving fair warning to everybody: Anyone who gets in my way is going to be sorry to interrupt me.

A lifetime of wholesome goodness. Wow!

Dear Diary,
I usually follow a pretty routine diet. Usually. But sometimes, when Voltaire succeeds at posturing and posing and begging for human food, I'll get slipped a bit of something else. Today Voltaire scored us some Cheerios. He was thrilled. He is always thrilled with any type of food he gets his paws on. Voltaire loves, loves, loves food.

Myself, I wasn't quite as excited about the "wholesome little o's" as Voltaire. Sure, I ate one. Allright, I ate two or three. Then, the Cheerios box caught my attention and I started to check out what's written on it.

On the front of the Cheerios box it states that Cheerios can reduce cholesterol. That sounds good. I wonder if 3 Cheerios is enough to lower my cholesterol. I wonder if, as a cat, I need to even worry about cholesterol. To tell the truth, as a cat I'm not really sure what cholesterol is--but I'm all about reducing it if that's a good thing.

It also states on the box: "Eat Cheerios and enjoy a lifetime of wholesome goodness for you and your family". Wow! That's a grand pledge and one that definitely sounds like something I'm interested in. So, all I need to do is eat some Cheerios and in return I get 1st rate, superior living. Not just for me, but for my entire family. Again, I wonder if eating 3 Cheerios is enough to gain that benefit. Y'know, I sure don't want to miss out on that promise of a "lifetime of wholesome goodness" for me and everybody else. Maybe I should meow at Voltaire to score us a few more Cheerios. I can hardly wait till breakfast comes around again tomorrow.

Live better electrically.

Dear Diary,
Things have been very odd in the house this week. Half the house keeps losing power. On...off...on...off. The folks had an electrician come last week to do some re-wiring, which he did. But, in the course of re-wiring, this new situation has happened with the power on the east side of the house cutting off and on every 15 minutes of so. Looks like the electrician will be back again tomorrow to take care of this new thing that keeps happening. That means I will probably spend most of the day tomorrow holed up in the bedroom.

Personally, I don't mind that the power keeps going off and on. I'm a cat, I can more or less live with or without electricity. Of course, I can't write in this diary very well without electricity...but everything else I can do just fine without power. Now the folks--they feel that they live better electrically. In fact, they don't think they can live without electricity. So, for their sake, I'll happily do what it takes to get the electricity steadily running, and that means being out of the way snoozing on the bed in the back for as long as it takes tomorrow. It's my pleasure, really. Anything to help out. For now, I better get off the computer before the power goes off again.
