Arrival Story:
he came into the world on april 11, 1993, an easter sunday. one tiny bundle of joy in a four piece litter, born to my then-uncle's cat, 'puss-puss'. i remember getting the call, a couple of weeks later, telling me that the babies were up and trying to explore, and that puss had stopped nursing. i rushed over, eager to bear witness to the 'first steps' - and i have never seen anything more beautiful than the look of pure innocence and curiosity in those eyes... there he was, a solid white ball of fuzz, with one thick red hair on the top of his head. he picked me out of the crowd, waddled up to me and curled up next to my leg. i insisted on taking him home, unweened, and only four weeks old... so, we raised him on turkey baby food, and spoiled him completely rotten. he got into trouble every chance he got. he used to do a fantastic godzilla ("gunkzilla") impression for Inky. he knew the difference between the words 'milk', 'mama', and 'mouses'. he loved to talk to nana on the phone. he hated the dog. he fetched rabbit's feet, sang part of the theme to the Mickey Mouse Show like a proud mouseketeer, and loved to sop up milk from the bottom of a tumbler by reaching into it with his arm... i still don't know how he kept from knocking the glass over... he loved chicken flavored toothpaste, and his very own, special elmo toothbrush. he got yelled at every christmas for pulling his stocking off of the mantle and fishing out the rabbit's feet that were lovingly stuffed inside. he slept in my hair almost every night for over eight years. some nights I think I can still hear him purring.... he was with me through all the major changes in my adult life, every move, every new job, and after my traumatic visit to the oral surgeon - he never left my side. last september he went to a place that has a bottomless glass of milk, and all the rabbit's feet he could ever want. and tonight, while he and Inky wait for Taz to bring the milk rings, i celebrate his life - and every second of laughter and happiness that he brought to mine. happy birthday, kiddo.
