Arrival Story: Flash, my golden doodle dog, missed his buddy (a cat from his shelter at Circle Tail Inc.) At the time I got him, I was not allowed to have a cat in my apartment. I have since moved to a new apartment where I CAN have a cat. So Flash and I headed to the humane society of greater dayton- animal resource center. The story gets a little bizarre... I have been trying for years to get my independence from my parents. Flash was the first step... it turns out Mao is the second. They said if I got a cat, I would have to ride the bus (they had been driving me places and would not allow me to ride the bus, saying it was dangerous for me since I have DID- multiple personality disorder- and could "lose it".) Now I ride the bus! So we rode the bus to the shelter and when we got there I left Flash outside the glass cat room (I could still see him and he could see me), and went in. All of the cats hid when I entered...except one. Once I had sat down in the middle of the floor, Mao came up and climbed into my lap. In less than a minute, I knew he was mine. I had to wait to take him home because they still had to neuter him. At the first meeting they would not let me introduce him to Flash. So I came back on Thursday, the day they had said he would be ready. Apparently he had not yet had his surgery, so they said to come back on Saturday. I was mad because I had taken the bus there and it had taken three hours, then I had to go back empty-handed and would have to make another three hour trip on Saturday. Well, I came back as I had said I would, on Saturday and I finally got to take him home. I had never had a cat so I had borrowed some books from the library. They said it would take a few hours, maybe even days!, to introduce Flash and Mao. But they were friends instantly- it was love at first sight! Mao escaped from her carrier (in the bus!) and walked face to face with Flash. She was fearless. She must have thought he was a big toy because she batted his ear with her paw. I stuffed her back in the carrier- afraid to traumatize either one. But both liked the other. When I got her home, she and Flash snuggled on the bed and took a nap after their long bus ride.

Bio: The staff at the animal resource center had laughed when I told them I was going to leash-train Mao. They said "good luck!" But today, his second day at home, I took him and Flash on a fifteen minute walk... he just followed Flash! I haven't walked him alone yet, and I'm going to let him walk with Flash awhile longer before we go out on our own. Mao is a talker! In a book on Siamese cats I read that they are the most intelligent and sociable of all cats. This is certainly true! I wonder if she can be a service animal like Flash.
