Arrival Story:
My in-laws found Emily under their porch one day. There were no littermates or Momcat around, and none of the neighbors know anything about her. They took her in, littertrained her, and spoiled her to bits. The only problem is my in-laws have 2 other cats in their house, several outside strays that call their house "home", and a rowdy Jack Russel Terrier to take care of. The last thing they needed was a kitten! So they asked us if we wanted her. We knew as soon as we saw her that we wanted her...she fell asleep purring in my arms and I fell in love with her. So now our other 2 cats, Belle and Sebastian, have a little sister to raise and teach all kinds of cat-stuff.

Bio:
My husband and I were jokingly throwing around baby names one day, in the event that I would accidentally get pregnant (long story...) We decided on Emily Marie for a girl, and Timothy Luke for a boy. That evening, we got a phone call from my in-laws asking us if we wanted a kitten. We did, and we named her Emily. It was meant to be...

The life of Emily

just doin' my job

Meowmy isn't feeling well today. She's spending the whole day in bed.

Of course, this means I must spend my whole day in bed wiff her and snorgle her and purr as much as I can. Because this job is so important, I only take breaks to use the litter bocks and occasionally play-fight wiff Sebastian.

Meowmy calls me a "therapeutic fuzzball of love" which I guess is a good thing. Sebastian has been wiff me most of the time during my vigil, and only leaves when he's had enuff of the play-fighting. Even Belle layed wiff Meowmy for a bit but she was too busy doin Belle things to lay around long.

I'm the only one who stuck like gloo to Meowmy and maintained my constant purring ALL DAY. I call it "endurents purring" and I think it should be a Olimpic sport cause if it was I would win a gold medal.

Meowmy thinks I should get a gold medal anyway for bein a good kitty. Sebastian and me would share it. And Belle too. We would all share it cause I like to share and I'm nice like that.

new kitty condo!!

Dude! My Meowmy brought home a kitty condo for me! It's pawsome for scratching and lounging and climbing and attacking Belle and Sebastian. It's my own little clubhouse all for meee! Oh, and I share it with Belle and Sebastian too, if they ask nice.

Meowmy got it for free from a nice guy 20 minutes from where we live. She got it from something cool called Freecycle. It's a email Meowmy gets with people offering stuff they don't want for free, all you gotta do is pick it up. This guy's two cats were too big to use the condo, but I'm small enuff to fit in the holes and on the top without tipping it or getting stuck. It even matches our other cat tree and it's sitting next to it, so we can jump from one to the other. Fun!

Meowmy says that the kitty condo is a much better place to scratch than the sofa.

Meowmy's entry...

Meowmy wanted to rite in my diary for today, but I told her "No Meowmy! Catster is for cats onlee!" Sebastian said I was just bein a "rebellyus adolesont" whatever that means and that Meowmy could use his Catster diary if she wanted...but I was like "No way! She asked me furst!" So I won that argooment and Meowmy gets to use my diary today. So here she is:

Hello everyone! I'm very privileged to be able to write in Emily's diary today. First of all, Thanks to Catster for picking Emily as a Daily Diary Pick today! This is her second time as DDP, and she's really excited about it. Sometimes she lets the fame go to her head, though.

I'm very tired today, because I stayed up until midnight last night making cat food. As many of you already know, Belle, Sebastian, and Emily eat homecooked food. Belle was diagnosed with urine crystals a few months back, and the vet would like to put her on prescription food, or a high quality canned. After researching how to make cat food at home, I realized that I could make a very high quality "wet" food at home for far cheaper than buying commercial food. So, after lots and lots of research, I took the plunge and bought some meat.

I think it should be mentioned at this point that I am a strict vegetarian and raw meat grosses me out profoundly.

BUT my cats love the stuff....

SO, they win.

Feeding my strict carnivores has been "fun" to say the least. I can't stomach the thought of completely raw-feeding them, just because I hate raw meat that much (it's the bacteria, I think...I'm a bit of a germophobe). But I don't want to feed them commercial food either...so...cooked homemade food is the best option for all of us.

I started out with buying ground turkey from the store and cooking it in a pan (this is before Emily came to live with us) and adding supplements. The cats starting getting a little thin from just the turkey, so for awhile we were buying chicken legs and cooking them and removing the bone and adding supplements (the skin and fat added calories so the cats got to a more normal weight). Then, we decided that it would be more natural to buy a whole chicken and cook that and add supplements (we figured the giblets would add some extra somethin' somethin'). We were in this stage when Emily came into our lives. For the first time last night, I only partially cooked the whole chicken (just enough that the meat was still pinkish but most of the bloody stuff was gone...eww) removed it from the bone, added some supplements and raw chicken livers (the livers eliminated the need to use vitamin A & D supplements, but added a huge yuck factor). I had no idea the grocery store even carried chicken livers (being a vegetarian, I don't hang out in the meat section too often. In fact, I never even visited the meat section until I started making cat food). It's amazing what you'll find when you explore a bit.

It's also amazing what you'll do in the name of love.

Did I mention that meat grosses me out majorly? As I was skeletonizing the chicken at 11:30 last night, Sebastian came to see what I was up to and then, realizing what I was up to, whined for some chicken. I gave him a hunk of it and watched as he eagerly devoured his "prey". Remembering why I was doing this made me feel much better. As much as I hate handling meat, I'm convinced that I'm doing what's best for my kids. It makes me feel good when I watch them running around like crazy and eating with so much gusto (Belle and Sebastian never had this much energy while eating kibble, even as kittens. Emily always has energy...but hasn't tasted kibble since she came to live with us and she's better for it).

Remembering how happy it makes them helps to reduce my gag reflex. For any fellow vegetarians out there that happen to live with cats and feed them homecooked or raw, I salute you.

I'll give Emily's blog back to her now...she's seriously walking on the keyboard.

Whoops! Typo! Meowmy is done with my diary now. I wanted it back. But I have nothing to say. So. Bye!
