indoors and outdoors Arrival Story: At the age of 3 years Lucy developed a condition that 3 different veterinarians failed to diagnose. I spent days on the internet before doing it myself because there just wasn't any information out there. Lucy has Feline Solar Dermatitis. As the sun gets stronger in May she begins to get white patches at the base of her ears that will progress to huge open sores covering the whole haired part of her ears with additional spots on her nose. They are very painful to her and I now know that they can become cancerous if untreated. They will manage to heal around November when the sun weakens. I finally found a vet who knew what she had and confirmed what I had found out. She gets a shot of Depo-Medrol in May and August and no more sores! This is more common in light colored cats (Lucy's black) and outdoor cats although my vet treats one who only sees the outdoors through a window. Thankfully my little short, fat girl prefers to stay inside with me in the summer time. She seems to know that sunshine hurts and as soon as it gets cool spends as much time outside as she can.
