What do you think???

I read a statement from a book by a farmer who's farm, I visited Sat..
It stated, "Animals have no souls".

I believe a farmer must think that way, in order to be a farmer and he does not wined up with an animal Sanctuary.

I want to know where is a line drawn to say animals, have no souls.

Just look deep into any animals eyes and believe there is emptiness inside. They breath, love, have fun, cry, hurt, grieve, feel pain, care and protect their young, and live here on earth just as Humans do.

Do you think this is or, is not a justified statement????
I would love to have some input on this subject!!!

Let's have a little to ponder tonight.

I don't believe that statement is justified at all. If animals didn't have souls then they wouldn't do anything of the things you mentioned such as grieving and loving. It takes a soul to love and grieve because an animals brain doesn't tell it how to feel, it's soul does. I think the farmer may have put the sign up simply so he doesn't feel guilt when the animals on his farm are slaughtered like the pigs and cows. He really shouldn't have put it up though.

This is an interesting subject and one that our Mom has studied extensively in order to write Lutheran sermons. The views expressed are her own opinions which take a Lutheran slant, but she is open to other views, because the main point is, we just don't know for sure.
Mom believes that animals have spirits, but not souls. They cannot believe or disbelieve in God, or choose a religious view of their own, that we know of. She believes that God puts certain animals in our midst that we are to care for and learn lessons from, mostly about unconditional love so that we can understand God's unconditional love. She thinks that when we die, we do not go directly to heaven because we have not had the ability to believe in God.
Are we in heaven? Mom knows that God wants humans to be happier than they could ever imagine while living in Heaven with Him for eternity. She believes that He places all the things that make humans happy in Heaven for them, including their pets. So she doesn't believe we go directly to heaven, but stay in a sort of holding area, like the Rainbow Bridge, until we are placed in Heaven for our humans.
Our spirits connect to those of our humans on earth, then later we are placed in Heaven because of that connection.
Is this the kind of discourse you were looking for? We hope so, and also hope we are not offending anyone with mom;s opinions.

When my cat Patches passed away I was visited by an angel in my dreams that told me that mine and Patches souls were both separated for now but that our souls would find each other again. Ever since then I've not had a problem believing they have souls.

We think there are as many opinions to this dilemma as there are animals.
Only the Lord knows the real answer, and maybe He think we are silly to ponder this, or maybe He doesn't...who knows?
He did give us the creatures of His creation to nurture and love, so we'd best remember that, at least.
We think a sign like that is cruel and shows heartlessness, sadly. If he needs to relieve his guilt feelings, then there are better ways to do that.
Even animals raised to be food are needing to be loved and well cared for, to keep them healthy and stress free.

In meowmy's opinion humans have created the concept of the R.B. because we don't truly know what happens to creatures when they leave their earthly bodies. When she furst came to Catster, she had nevfur heard of it, LOL!

At any rate we know that an animal that has touched our lives and been loved by their humans will never be furgotten by them. Nevfur. That is comforting.

oh yes mom has wondered this very often and even listen to a CD by Jack Van Impe (not sure of the spelling) and we believe the soul is the mind will and emotions of a person so if that is correct then we believe animals have souls too cause we animals have a mind, a will, (you know our will to do what we want or what our pawrents want us to do) and emotions. so we gotta soul. We like what Tink said about the RB being holding place for us to meet with our humans when they get to heaven but mom likes to think Jesus visits the bridge and comforts us while we wait for our families to join us. who knows for sure (?) but mom is so comforted to think her furbabies are waiting for her. Sometimes mom even sees us waiting in the "mansion" that is mentioned in the Bible. She sees me on her bed in the master bedroom waiting for her like I did every night on earth with her. Unless she is proven wrong mom will always belive we will be in heaven with her.
I know I will never be forgotten. Hugs and purrs from all of us

I love this people the answers are fantastic. I hope I have a lot get more point of view.
I truly believe the farmer(not being one myself) may have to have that kind of view in order to justify his thoughts on taking animals to market.
This farm had very well cared for animals and a lot of controlled free range cows, chickens, and other animals.
This farmer had written many books and this was a statement that was in one of them. this statement was also quoted by Wikipedia. This farm is well know worldwide for it's farming methods. I could never be a farmer as I would keep them all and have a Sanctuary 20 times what I have now and all the animals would be dieing of old age.
When I saw this it got me to thinking that it would be a good question to ask to get you Catsters thinking and sharing. I love it.

Wikipedia had an overview about this farm. That is where I saw one quote. I also saw the quote as an overview written by him in one of this farmers books.

Wow! Deep question. Mom's quick answer would be that they are created by God and therefore should have a soul, but that it would be different from a human soul. I don't think that animals are capable of sin and surely won't face judgement in the afterlife. Mom also thinks that animals will go to Heaven when they die and that we will be re-united with them. I'm very curious as to what everyone thinks, how can we really know for sure....

I agree this might be the mindset one has to have in order to be a successful farmer. Very interesting topic of discussion.

Momma believes dat all living things have a soul/spirit. Every one's are different though, but she thinks we is all connected to each other and God. And although nobody knows for sure what happens when we die, momma doesn't think it could be heaven if she couldn't be with her animals.

I believe all animals have souls. I know you all have looked into the eyes of your cats/dogs/pets and have seen into their eyes. They love, grieve, can be happy or sad.

Interesting topic to discuss.

Our mom thinks that if humans have souls, then animals do too. She is not religious, but she is spiritual. The incredible love that our humans feel for us is reciprocated by us. Just one look into our loving eyes and there is no doubt as far as my mom is concerned.
