PRLog (Press Release) Nov 30, 2010 November 30, 2010 People shower their pets with gifts for the holidays, and SantaPawsDrive.com was started because shelter animals deserve a little Christmas cheer, too! Dogs and cats in animal shelters are often overlooked during this season, and the goal of Santa Paws Drive is to bring some much-needed joy to these less-fortunate animals.
Now in its second year, SantaPawsDrive.com was started in 2009 by four animal-loving pet bloggers who wanted to use their loyal online following to start a program similar to “Toys for Tots,” but for animals. The idea was to make a Web site where people could donate easily online from home by purchasing toys, treats or a cash donation. At the end of the drive, the total donations are split between six shelters around the world and giant gift packages of toys and treats are shipped off to the shelter animals in time for Christmas.
“I wanted to do a toy drive for shelter animals, but I wanted to do more than just drop off a donation at my local shelter,” says SantaPawsDrive.com founder, Dorian Wagner. “I wanted to make it big and I wanted to help shelters all over the world.”
Wagner, whose blog is YourDailyCute.com, reached out to three fellow pet bloggers for help and, together, the three of them made Santa Paws Drive a reality.
“It’s crazy when you think about it,” Wagner explains. “We’d never met in person or even talked on the phone when we first put this together last year. It was all done through email, Twitter and Facebook. We live all over — in Florida, California, Pennsylvania and the United Kingdom!”
Nominations for shelters were taken for two weeks before Santa Paws Drive officially kicked off a week ago, and six shelters were chosen based on need, nomination note and location. Four are in the U.S., one is in Canada, one in the UK and one in Tenerife, off the coast of Africa.
Last year, Santa Paws Drive raised approximately $7,000 in donations, toys and treats, and this year, the team hopes to be able to send even more holiday cheer to the shelters.
“Helping animals is what makes us happy,” Wagner says. “Santa Paws Drive is something we are so excited to do and so passionate about. Our ultimate wish is that all these animals would have homes, but if they can’t have that, at least they can have a little extra love during the holidays.”
