Tsutomu Mizumoto was arrested early Wednesday last week on the northern island of Hokkaido.
Police responded to an emergency call about a car driving the wrong way on a freeway near the city of Otaru. After spotting the vehicle, they pursued the driver, ordering him to stop.
But Mizumoto ignored them and drove on, smashing through five emergency blockades and passing through a tollgate. His rampage ended about 90 minutes later.
“I was sad that my pet cat died,” he was quoted as telling police. “I wanted to do something crazy.”
