My cat does this when she is "mad" at me. She puts her back to me and then her tail goes back and forth. I have also heard this means they are thinking. Who knows?
my cats lash their tails back and forth when they see something moving like bug up on our ceiling or a bird out of our window and they cant get to it.
I agree with the answers. My cat moves her tail about when she is hunting, playing and when she is annoyed of me!

Delilah's tail moves back and forth when she's comfortable on the arm of my chair. Izzie's tail goes straigh up when he's very interested in something or he knows he's about to get fed his daily wet food treat. My daughter's Bombay-mix shakes her tail when she greets people. It's funny to watch it vibrate. And if it is truly switching back and forth rapidly, that usually means they're not happy about something.
