What is the best way to introduce a new puppy to my cats? One is (Russian Blue)four and the other is 2!

We are bringing home a Bassett Hound tomorrow to our Russian Blue (four years of age) and the other long haired domestic princess is 2

Create a "safe room" for your kitties. Go to Wal-mart and buy a baby gate with plastic mesh. Cut a kitty sized hole in the mesh and put it in the doorway of the safe room. Put your kitty's litter pans in there, and even some toys, food and water. Make sure it's anchored so the new doggy baby can't knock it over. The cats can get through the hole when they need to escape, but Baby Dog cannot. Pretty soon, when kitties feel safe, they'll start hanging around Dog Baby but still have the option to go to "their" room if needs be. I still leave this gate up now. It keeps my three dogs from going on archeological (spelling??) digs in the litter boxes. (Yuk). Cats are pretty good at running and hiding from dogs. They learn really fast where all the hiding places are in the house. And if Dog Baby gets to rambunctious, a slap on the nose (from kitties) usually changes their minds really fast. Good luck!

I would let the kitties roam about as they normally do, and confine the dog for very short periods in a separate room (bathroom, bedroom) so they can get used to him. (sniffing under the door, etc.) Gradually bring the dog out but always be with the dog, and let the kitties see him. Don't force them to be near the dog,let them go to the dog. They may do so, and they may NEVER do so! Whatever you do, do it gradually. We are a family of 6 kitties and 2 dogs, and one kitty never goes near the dogs (but he'll sit near them if they're quiet), yet one insists on always being with them! It depends on personality. With time and patience, everyone will get used to each other and become friends. It typically takes about two weeks to acclimate everyone; cats to new cats and cats to new dogs, and so on. GOOD LUCK!
