What can I do about my cat's persistent desire to go outside? Answers at Dogster Answers.

I have a mid-age snoeshoe cat. I am her third owner, and am unsure of her age, although I'm guessing around 5 or 6 years. She was an indoor cat. Somewhere along the line someone removed her front claws. She had a great disposition, and was very affectionate. My boyfriend started letting her go outside during times he was out. She LOVES it. Unfortnuately, now her personality has changed into an aloof, somewhat moody cat who only wants to go outside. She is no longer friendly or affectionate. Besides this annoying behavior change, I am concerned about her being out where she is unable to defend herself. She has been attacked by a feral cat and it necessitated her being on antibiotics. Also, a little, sad handicapped dog has been brought into the house (6 months ago) and she hates him. This is probably part of her behavior change. I just don't know what to do! I want my old cat back! Please help. I've tried to pay extra attention to her, but she is just not friendly anymore. HELP!

Im thinking that your kitty feels as though you are punishing her by not letting her out? The previous responses make a good point>bad things happen to outdoor kitties...trust me i know, all of my cat friends from childhood were out door kitties and they would come back in some terrible states!
De clawing....well...i dont agree with ,but i know it was not you but you are right she cant defend herself and other cats will pick up on that. Has kitty been Spayed yet?
An idea would be to allow her supervised time out, take some time out of you schedual to take her into the fresh air and escape from it all, good bonding for you both, it may be practical to build an outdoor enclosure for her pop a childs play pen out...doesnt suit all cats but she may be content wih a little slice of freedom?Take her out when shes hungry and bring her back in with a treat, she will associate coming home with a good experience. Hopefully in time she will get used to her new doggy housemate. Hope you find answer

I buy my anxious cat a small dogs retractable leash and harness to go outside. If you do, dont use a breakaway collar as the cat can slip out. Always supervise your cat. Good Luck!

You're right, your kitty is very unhappy about the dog being in her territory. She is stressed and anxious and just wants to get away from it all. Please don't let her out, however, without direct supervision. Too many bad things can happen to outdoor kitties.

Please talk to your vet and to a animal behavior consultant about easing your cat's anxiety. Please do some reading about introducing a new dog to a resident cat - you may have to start from scratch with these two. You may even have to rehome the dog. Good luck.
